Ladislav Ahmed Vondřich

* April 20, 1886, Prague
+ 28 September 1938, Prague

After graduating from business school, he went to the then Russian part of Poland. After the outbreak of the war, he joined the Warsaw Czech Companions and showed his courage at the front during intelligence operations. Already in November 1914 he received the St. George Medal of the IV degree and then between June 1915 and September 1916 all four degrees of the Cross of St. George. He thus became a full Georgian cavalier. There were only 12 of these in the Bohemian Company. In June 1916 he was promoted to ensign for bravery. After the Battle of Zborov, he was the temporary commander of 1st Company and briefly also of the 1st Battalion of the 1st Czechoslovak Rifle Regiment. In September 1917 he became commander of 2nd Company, but a month later he was appointed commander of the 1st Battalion of the 1st Czechoslovak Reserve Regiment. In the same month, he received the Order of St. Anne, IV degree with the inscription "For valour" and the Honorary Weapon of the Order of St. George for his actions at Zborov. In late 1917/1918 he completed a course for battalion commanders and briefly became interim regimental commander several times in the spring. During the evacuation from the Ukraine he commanded the first train of his regiment.

After the outbreak of hostilities with the Bolsheviks, he fought successfully as part of Cheka's Penzensky Group. On 2 July, he was tasked to take Dymka station at the head of 340 men, which was to prevent the retreat of the Simbir group of Bolsheviks. After moving for two days, they managed to take the station, trap two armoured trains there and dismantle the tracks. Soon, however, five more Bolshevik trains arrived, bringing up to 3,000 soldiers with 4 guns and many machine guns. Against these odds, Vondrich's group had no chance and had to start retreating. This was eventually done, but the Czechoslovak side had 12 dead and missing. Although the operation appeared to be a failure, in the end it facilitated the advance of the Czechoslovak units on Bugulma, as it caused confusion in the Bolshevik rear, by damaging the track it slowed their movements and they still had to repair the armoured trains. Between June and August 1918, Vondrich simultaneously commanded the South Slavic part of the 1st Czechoslovak Rifle Division.

On 15 August, the 1st Czechoslovak Reserve Regiment was merged with several smaller units to form the 9th Czechoslovak Rifle Regiment, of which he became a disposition officer. However, just five days later he was appointed inspector of prison camps at the rank of major and left for Omsk. In April 1919, he was assigned to the Tiel Intendant's Department and in July sailed for Europe with the 6th Transport on the Liverpool Maru as the Republic's representative to the shipowner, supervising the cargo being carried. He spent two days on duty in Prague and then returned to Vladivostok on the same ship. He finally arrived home with the 35th transport on the President Grant in October 1920.

There is an interesting fact connected with his person. In 1914-1917, many Czechoslovaks in Russia converted to Orthodoxy, the main reason being to prove their loyalty to the Tsar. However, in August 1919 Vondrich left the Roman Catholic Church and converted to Islam, taking the name Ahmed. Thus, in his qualification papers, we find "Muslim" written nicely in the religion column. He was thus included in one of Karel Fibich's poems:
If ever the beekeeper had dragged Ahmed -
that's a rhyme for the name Achmed,
with which Major Vondrich adorns himself -
I don't know what he's doing now.

(Legionary Guard No. 32, July 26, 1935)

At home, he continued to serve in the army, and between 1921 and 1926 he served successively as second-in-command of Infantry Regiment 5, 15, 26 and 25, and was promoted to colonel in October 1924. However, he did not perform his service properly and had a major drinking problem, for which he was punished several times. As there was no improvement even then, he was retired in April 1927. In 1920 he still received the Order of the Falcon with Swords, Czechoslovak War Cross, Revolutionary Medal and Victory Medal for his service in Russia.

Subsequently, Ahmed Vondrich lived in Prague but suffered from ill health. He was a member of the Independent Union of Czechoslovak Legionnaires. He died on 28 September 1938 in a military hospital in Prague and was cremated on 4 October in the new crematorium in Strašnice.
