Yakovlev Yak-200 - origin and development

The prototype of the Jak-200 aircraft was created at the request of representatives of the Soviet Air Force for a training machine for jet bomber crews Il-28. The condition was the layout of the crew and control of the machine as similar as possible to the Il-28. In addition to training, the machine was also used for fitness flights of pilots and navigators of combat units.

The order for the construction of the prototype was won by the design office OKB-115, which was led by a well-known Soviet designer A.S. Yakovlev. The aircraft initially bore the designation Jak-TBU (classroom benirovočnyj bombardirovščik), later Jak-16. However, this designation was soon abolished and later assigned to a completely different type. The assignment stated that it was to be a three-seater machine designed for the training of pilots and navigators, which should reach a speed of at least 400 km/h at an altitude of 2000 meters. The aircraft was to carry 300 kg of bombs, access should not be less than 6000 meters, range was set at 1150 km and landing speed 120-130 km/h. In the case of acceptance into service, two versions were to be produced - one for pilot training and the other for navigator training (this version was marked Jak-210).

In the spring of 1953, they were the first to design a machine designed for pilot training, which was given the designation Jak-200. The test pilot of the design office F.L. completed the first test flight. Abramov ( Л.Л.Абрамов) in March 1953. Four months later, in July 1953, the factory tests were completed and three days after their completion, the Jak-200 was handed over to Science. Military Aviation Research Institute ( НИИ ВВС). According to military researchers who have tested the machine since July 29. to 10.09.1953, the equipment of the cabin, pilot board and control of individual units sufficiently corresponded to the work of the pilot Il-28, however, the final conclusion was not to recommend the aircraft for series production. There were several reasons. Piloting during takeoff was assessed as complicated, the aircraft had insufficient longitudinal stability, there was no equipment for defrosting the propeller and the cockpit. In addition, the Jak-200 tended to turn into a corkscrew in some flight modes.

In Yakovlev's OKB, they incorporated the customer's comments and eliminated the most serious shortcomings, which, however, lasted more than three months. At the same time, the weight of the empty aircraft increased by 120 kg, the take-off weight increased by 195 kg. As a result of weight gain, the maximum speed and climbability decreased slightly. The take-off and landing characteristics also deteriorated slightly, but the range and access increased. At the beginning of January 1954, the modified Jak-200 was again handed over for testing to the Air Force.

The test pilots stated that the flight characteristics had improved significantly after the modification, while the ground staff praised the simple maintenance of the machine and good access to the individual units.

Despite these positive test results, the decision of the Committee of Ministers of 26 March 1956 halted all work on this interesting aircraft. The reason was Il-28U, which proved to be more suitable for the required purposes.

From a technical point of view, the Jak-200 was a twin-engine all-metal mid-plane with a nose-type retractable landing gear. The single-girder wing with removable brackets had a relative thickness of 15% at the root and 5% at the wingtips. Two air-cooled star engines Švecov AŠ-21, which spun two-bladed adjustable propellers VIŠ-ŠV-20A ( ВИШ-ШВ-20А). The chassis retraction, the opening of the cab cover and the brakes were pneumatic. The crew, unlike the assignment, consisted of two people - a student and an instructor, sitting next to each other. The radio equipment consisted of the radio station RSIU-3M ( РСИУ-ЗМ), automatic radiocompass ARK-5 ( АРК-5), radio altimeter RV-2, intercom SPU-5 ( СПУ-5), answering machine SRO-2 ( СРО-2) and marking receiver MRP-48P ([i: ] МРП-48П)
