Born in Tokyo in 1884, he entered Sakamachi Elementary School in Detsve, graduating in 1897, then continued his studies at Waseda High School.
The following year, he transferred to Tokyo Army High School and then to Central Army High School.
In 1899 he began his studies at the Imperial Military Academy, which he completed in 1904. After graduating, he was assigned to the 1st Infantry Regiment as a lieutenant.
In the years 1910 to 1913 he graduated from the Army War College and shortly after its completion he became captain. After this period, he held various staff positions and worked as a consultant in China for a short period of 20 years.
From 1932 to 1933, Okamura served as Deputy Chief of Staff of the Shanghai Expeditionary Army. After this period he worked as a military attaché in Manchukuo was 1933-1934. In 1936, the general became a lieutenant and was entrusted with command 2. division. The division is located on the mainland and is involved in the Marco Polo Bridge incident in 1937.
One year after the incident on the Marco Polo Bridge, in 1938 he was entrusted with the command of the 11th Army, which participated in many actions of the Second Sino Japanese War. During the fighting, Okamura was authorized by Emperor Show to use chemical weapons in combat.
In April 1940, Okamura became a general and in July 1941 commander of the Army of the North China Zone.
In December 1941, he received Order No 575, whose primary goal was to defeat the Chinese Red Army and use the scorched earth, resulting in the deaths of more than 2.7 million Chinese civilians.
In 1944, he commanded as commander in chief of the massive and successful operation Ichigo, aimed at airports in southern China, and personally took command Army of the 6th Zone.
Shortly afterwards, he gets the Chinese Expeditionary Army under his command. After the war, Okamura represented the Japanese army operating on the battlefield of China, Burma, India at the surrender ceremony in Nanjing on 9.9.1945.
In July 1948, Okamura was indicted for war crimes by the Nanjing War Crimes Tribunal. However, immediately afterwards, he receives personal protection from the leader of the Chinese National Force, Chiang Kai-shek, who entrusts him with being a military adviser to the Kuomintang government (KMT). Okamura returned to Japan in 1949 and died in 1966.
