She was born on 1 December 1920 in a working-class family in Krasnodar. After high school, she enrolled at the Moscow Aviation Technical Institute and the Moscow Aeroclub Pilot School, which she graduated from shortly before the outbreak of war.
She joined the Red Army as a volunteer in October 1941 and served at the front from May 1942. Lieutenant Zhigulenko, the commander of the Zhukovsky Guards, made 773 combat sorties in 46. She was awarded the Gold Star of the Hero of the USSR on 23 February 1945. In addition, she was a two-time recipient of the Order of the Red Banner, Order of the Patriotic War 1st Class, Order of the Red Star, numerous medals and one Yugoslav decoration.
She served in the army until 1955, when she was transferred to the reserve at the rank of major-general. After further studies, she worked as a director in Moscow from 1976. In 1981, she made the famous film ""В небе"Ночные Ведмы"".
