Jokosuka D3Y Mjódžó

Yokosuka D3Y Myōjō - přehled verzí
Yokosuka D3Y - version overview

It was a trainer aircraft based on the deck-mounted dive bomber Aichi D3A1

Yokosuka D3Y1-K
Two prototypes built at the Yokosuka Naval Air Arsenal

Yokosuka D3Y1-K 22
Final form for production at factories that were not busy with wartime production of combat types, production at Matsushita Koku Kogyo K.K. factory, 3 aircraft built

Yokosuka D3Y2
The special attack aircraft project was a last ditch effort to bring the type back to life. In 1945, there was a need for a simple and inexpensive production aircraft for the needs of kamikaze pilots, but this machine was not ready by the end of the war.

Yokosuka D3Y or Kugisho D5Y
Myojo and Myojo KAI
Single-engined bomber aircraft for the training
and one special attack aircraft

History:

Japanese naval air force is already after the two war years got into problems in the training of new pilots, who came after basic training to combat units, or in the best case, to the continuation of the courses. Kaigun Koku Hombu was desperately trying to add pilots, it ran when it still on the same difficulty with the organization of training, training of new pilots was still set to a pre-war training mode, i.e. to high quality training and it also meant a large time demands. Nemenším problem was the lack of continuation training aircraft. On these training airplanes can have already had the flight crew to acquire the experience and habits, to the actual combat years ago. In peaceful times the new crew flew a combat aircraft, however, was already after two years of war and lack, therefore, was a naval aviation arsenal in the Jokosuce invited to propose a suitable aircraft.

New trainer aircraft should enable new osádkám a smooth transition to a real combat aircraft, and its production is not to burden the japanese economy of the too big material requirements and large production capacity. Designers jokosuckého maritime arsenal took as a basis the project of the Y-50 (such was his work label) dive bomber Aichi D3A2 Val, the proposed adjustments should be designed to simplify the production, the wings of the Mound was elliptic, and that meant quite a considerable production footprint, a new trainer aircraft should therefore wings lichoběžníková, which was possible quite effectively to produce. The metal structure of the aircraft was largely replaced by structures of wood. This construction yields the advantages as well as disadvantages. The main advantage was that in addition to saving scarce raw materials, there was the possibility of producing the aircraft less qualified workers and, above all, the production could move to smaller factories and the wooden parts of the structure could be made in woodworking workshops, these benefits have been redeemed by the significantly higher mass of this design, less strength and lower resistance to moisture.

The first two prototypes (zalétané in July and August 1944) is due to the large weight of the nadaly almost fly, the aircraft were heavy and unstable. Naval aviation is adopted under the designation of D3Y1-TO Myojo and at the same time it took to relieve pressure. Arsenal in the Jokosuce forward production supporting a small factory Matsushita Koku Kogyo K. To., here, the technicians tried to reduce weight, there are three series airplanes, that here were incurred by the end of the war (I do not know whether at all one can talk about serial production), managed to reduce at least about 133 kg, some sources mention also a slight reduction of the margin of the wings (the figures vary, somewhere is presented in a reduction of about 80 mm somewhere he writes about 300 mm) and a reduction in the length of the hull. All three aircraft flew more or less only when the verification years, which have not been installed armament. (Failed me anywhere to find out whether any of the aircraft, therefore, also previously produced prototype of the equipment was installed.)

The other aircraft manufacturing Myojo is not already the case, and one of the reasons why this was so, was the gradual emergence of the new dive bomber Yokosuka D4Y, so how were the overkill of the individual units, and led to the exclusion of a few tens of D3Y2 and these older Mounds have been edited into shape on the training version of the D3A2-K. Aircraft suitable for the adjustment was sufficient and the adjustment of the already produced aircraft was easier than the production of a new type.

Once again, however, the production was considered, it was towards the end of the war, now, however, no longer act on the aircraft trainer, but a single variant Myojo Kai for the suicide attack. The aircraft could be produced in many places, this would not by bombing to stop its production, economy is shown also, for example, in the construction of the originally solid chassis, new suicide aircraft it needed only for takeoff, then should be discarded and the chassis could be used for another aircraft. This project has already failed to realize it into a final form.
