ЗиЛ-134
ZiL-134
Development history:
Based on the results of tests of the ZiS-E134 prototype and other experimental designs of vehicles with increased terrain clearance, a team led by V.A.Grachev, in a special design bureau (СКБ - Специальное конструукторское бюро) of the ZiL automobile company designed and in January 1957 also produced the four-axle automobile tractor ZiL-134 (АТК-6 Artillery event. automobile tractor - wheeled).
Special design features:
The power unit, automatic three-speed hydromechanical transmission, main transmission with automatic differential locks, complete chassis with independent suspension of all wheels and extended travel of the swinging suspension members were specially manufactured for the new vehicle, Articulated hubs and wheel hub reducers, hydraulic power steering, pressurized hydropneumatic brakes, starting heater/preheater, 16.00-20" tires and central pressure control system, and many other "special features".
As the author of the original article says, "nothing like this was known until then, not only in the Soviet Union, but imagine, not even in the whole world"...

The results of the course of the following demanding tests in difficult conditions, in different geographical and climatic conditions confirmed the correctness of the vehicle design.
In terms of terrain passability, the ZiL-134 was fully equal to and in no way lagged behind special tracked transporters; in terms of mobility in poorly bearing terrain and on high obstacles, especially in the range of medium speeds when driving off paved roads, the vehicle's qualities exceeded the capabilities of tracked vehicles by up to two times.
Especially outstanding were the driving characteristics and mobility of the new vehicle design in the case of towing heavy artillery assets - e.g. ZiL-134 with towed 100 mm plk KS-19 without any difficulties overcame deep mud of pre-spring thaw, waterlogged grass meadows, muddy bogs, deep sand, but also a layer of loose snow up to 1.2 m high and the vehicle was able to "plough" like a tank through a mature forest with tree trunks up to 25 cm in diameter.
The Lack of durability of some subassemblies and some immaturity of the power unit prevented the introduction of mass production of this exceptional off-road vehicle.
One of the prototypes was handed over to the restored Bryansk automobile plant БАЗ, where it served as a model for the construction of the БАЗ-930 type, and was then handed over to the museum of the scientific research institute НИИ-21 (Научно-исследовательский институт).
The second of the prototypes of the vehicle was handed over to the Bauman Higher Technical School (МВТУ - Московсе высше техническое училище), where, long after the project's development had been halted, the audience was still learning and learning about the construction of a real off-road vehicle...
None of the prototypes of the ZiL-134 design have survived to this day.

Technical data found:
Ground clearance 500 mm
Curb weight 14,000 kg
Payload capacity not found
Weight of trailer towed
on the road with a load of 3t not detected
off-road with a load of 3t not detected
Power unit (type) not detected, 12 cylinders to V
Power unit displacement not ascertained
Power unit output 240 hp.
Data relating to the vehicle's speed on and off the road, to the vehicle's ability to negotiate artificial terrain obstacles (overrunning, traversing perpendicular terrain, gradient and lateral inclination, depth of wading), etc. not specified.

If you find some of the wording a bit galling, please know that in translating it, I have tried only to preserve the author's pathos with which he wrote about the vehicle in the original article...

Based on the experience with this vehicle, a more successful successor, the originally amphibious ZiL-135, was constructed by the same bureau in 1958.
