In the second half of the 19. century for the army have become the railway's main and actually the only means of public transportation, which confirmed the first world war. At the same time, showed, that neither the dense rail network does not fully ensure the armies of the desirable mobility or necessary supply, especially when causing its damage or destruction. Therefore, already in this war, to take effect efforts to eliminate the complete dependence on the railway network. Was looking for a technical solution, allowing to according to the needs of the transport either along the tracks or along the road.

This solution made use of the austrian army by the most difficult of ground artillery, its trains "C", designed Daimlerovými races in the Vienna New Town in collaboration with pilsen Škodovými races, into whose sphere of influence then belonged, were intended for the traction of the 24 cm guns and the 38 cm and 42 cm howitzers. The total known is the pioneering application of benzínoelektrického drive. The solution worked and the trains were also soldiers. the army for its the hardest gun system Damage - 24 cm cannon vz. 16.

The idea of combining road and rail vehicles for 1. world war applied also for the other warring armies. In German is the most proven of the so-called railway truck Büssing. After the war, two of these cars purchased and csl. the army and used them pardubice railway regiment. There were, however, very worn (production year 1915 !), a few powerful, structurally obsolete (chain-driven rear wheels) and in the operation of complicated (and unable to return journey). Therefore, the MNO to the end of the 20. the years looking back after refund.

The design solution was yet not easy. Required to make the transition from road to track, or vice versa, it could perform anywhere and in a short time, only by the means located on the vehicle.

To design your own track car has embarked on and the pilsen škoda the škoda works races. Stimulus has become the order of the prototype of the MNO in the year 1931. Experience with the construction of the special road vehicles and locomotives in Pilsen had. However it was not easy to reconcile conflicting requirements arising from the different conditions of operation, whether it was management, the adjustment of the gearbox, odpérování and security point of view. The vehicle KT4 robust construction, good performance and operationally reliable. The various sub-deficiencies have been after the first tests of the prototype in August of 1932 removed. Focused on cooling the engine, transmission and electrical lighting.

The new tests took place in April 1934 on the road Pilsen-Klatovy and on the railway line Pilsen-the New Courtyard/Pšovany-Bezdružice. There were no operational glitches. The prototype was then moved by road to Prague, where it was at the machinery service of the Military technical and aviation institute in the Program completed a preliminary receipt. The technical conditions of the order Škoda basically fulfilled, exceeded it was only the mass of the vehicle (about 10%). Due to the fact that the vehicle should be used by the railway regiment mainly for riding on the rails, the commission has decided to MNO exceeding the weight tolerate. AMOUNTS paid for the prototype 290000 Csk. Finally the car was KT4 taken in July 1934 by a railway regiment in Pardubice. Truck loaded with a cargo of 5 tons with the attached 3 goods wagons with a total weight of 68 tonnes, easily surpassing the railway line to climb 17%. It is interesting that the opposition did not create the relatively long time required for adjustment of the vehicle from the road to the hostel, where zapracovaným workers of Skoda lasted for mounting a half hours, but nezacvičenému the ranks of the railway regiment three times.

Škoda counted with the fact that MNO after taking prototype orders the army of the entire series, it didn't happen. The operation of the railway regiment showed that the benefits of the combined vehicle are not so unambiguous and so the vehicle KT4 remained only a unique technical attractions.
