Dempsey, Miles Christopher

Miles Christopher Dempsey was born 15. December 1896 in Wallasey. Attended Shrewsburyskou high school, the Royal military college in Sandhurst. After his graduation he joined in 1915 to the Royal berkshirskému regiment, with which he served on the western front in France. For bravery, won the Military cross. At La Vacquerie was hit by poison gas, which later necessitated the removal of one lung. At the beginning of the second world war he commanded the 13. infantry brigade of the British expeditionary force in France. During the evacuation brigade successfully participated in securing a defensive perimeter. For that Dempsey has earned the DSO. After returning to Britain he served in the headquarters of the canadian corps and in 1941 took over as commander of 46. infantry division. Yet in the same year he was transferred to command the 42. the armored division. In December 1942 he took over in north Africa in command of the XIII. ward 8. army. Participated in the preparation of the plans for the invasion of Sicily and at the head of the corps crossed in the part of operation Baytown-the strait of Messina and proceeded to the north to Salerno.

In the Mediterranean Dempsey gained fame as an expert on amphibious operation. It is therefore not surprising that Montgomery chose as the commander of the 2. the army in the planned invasion of northern France. After the successful landing of Dempsey led the slow wear of the fight for Caen and its surroundings. Then on the contrary, his troops quickly advanced into northern France, Belgium and Antwerp. In march 1945 with 2. the army crossed the river Rhine and proceeded to Bremen, Hamburg and Kiel. When the war in Europe ended, he took over Dempsey in Malaysia 14. the army and the Malaysian headquarters. He then became the commander of ground forces in southeast Asia. In 1946 he took over the command of the land forces in the Middle east. However, in August of the following year left the army. In 1948 he married Viola O'reilly. In 1950, he became the shadow commander of the british home forces, and held by different units of the functions of the honorary colonels. He served also as chairman of the board of directors of the brewery. Died 5. June 1969 in Yattendonu.
