History

The year of our lord 1348, namely 10. June, left to start a Charles IV. castle, which is today ranked Prague castle to our most visited and the most famous cultural landmarks at all. He wasn't just a mere castle, the residence of the ruler or the box of various ceností, but was also an expression of an expression of the sovereign - his concept of a royal life. The founding of the castle and specifically the laying of the foundation stone was conceived quite generously. Although emperor Charles IV himself. was staying at that time in the Czech lands, he took care to be the foundation stone consecrated archbishop of prague Arnošt of Pardubice. 10. June 1348, was chosen deliberately, because in that time in Prague was a large number of leading masters from the Czech republic and other countries of the Czech Kingdom, who have gathered here on the occasion of the general assembly. To underline the importance of the castle of Charles IV. confirmed by first building he called her my name, while being explicitly reminded that the castle has added "its own name for its own memory, that is named the Castle after Charles". In addition, at that time already taken care of his, both material and military security. Specifically, set up a variety of manství. What is the choice of the place is concerned, it was selected (probably by the king), that was located 22 km from Prague, then one day driving with the horses.

The construction of the castle itself was incredibly fast since year 1355 has already finished the construction of the royal palace and stayed here the monarch. He here came in November when returning from the Italian coronation drive. Year 1357 brought the founding of the castle of the chapter, for her needs it was set up church of the Virgin Mary. The completion of the castle symbolizes the consecration of the chapel of the holy Cross year a 1365 (however, the building had to be the castle done already about 10 years ago). Management and the defense of the castle was in charge of the burgrave, he was available both mana knighthood, who inherit the estates in the area. You have to in case of threat to the castle to attend and defend him. Should there manskou the living room and closet on the armor. He also had available many robotné, you had an obligation held by the guards at the gate, ring the bell every day and maintain the cleanliness of the courtyard. Charles IV. a lot stayed and apparently oversaw the completion of the making of works of art. Of the year 1371, here fell gravely ill and his wife Alžběta Pomořanská take a walking pilgrimage to Prague, to the tomb of st. Sigismund. Authors then state that miraculously healed. After castle visited only a few times, last time in November of the year 1376 with his son Václav IV., two years on it he died. Václav IV. at first he stayed at the castle with his first wife Johanou Bavarian, but he was the last emperor who stayed here.

When they began the hussite storm, have been to Karlstejn transported not only to the Czech crown jewels along with some other valuables, such as Zbraslavského of the monastery. For some time there were the Czech and the imperial korunovančí jewels. You then had to take Sigismund of Luxembourg. The Czech crown jewels are back in 1436, but the imperial never.
In the year of the 1421 it was the hussites pillaged this castle castle and a year later in may 1422 it tried to conquer prague the hussites under the leadership of Zikmund Korybutoviče, but failed. The proof of this siege are preserved substantial remains of the siege works. During dobývaní castle the prague hussites in Prague to take your kind of sanitary action when cleared prague of the sump, but that's just because that their content could bring in bečkách to the besieged city of Karlštejn and throwing is siege catapults on the castle and its defenders. Further, the hurled stone balls, or burning barrels with pitch. Yet they never get into the hands and in the hussite Bohemia was a kind of stronghold of the catholics.

If there were of the year 1436 returned to the Czech crown jewels, furthermore, here were stored the most important of the charter and the documents of the archive of the Czech. The castle also got appointed the second, the burgrave. One was from a higher lordly state, the second from a lower order of knighthood. Definitely became a castle, the symbol of the reign of king Vladislav II. Jagiello, he was singled out from the area of his direct arbitrariness and the office of the local burgrave was one of the most important in the Czech kingdom. The late-gothic reconstruction of the burgrave took place under the burgrave Benes from Weitmile. Access to the castle, was then changed to the new gates, most likely at a time when there purkrabský office zastavali lords of Hradec. After the fire of Prague in 1541, when burned the earth's plates, it was decided that their duplicates will be preserved at Karlstejn. The years 1578 to 1597 meant for the castle a number of renaissance reconstructions carried out by the builder Oldrich Avostalis da Sala. The remodeling is deserved especially karlštejnský burgrave Jáchym Novohradský of the spinning wheel in the letechech 1587 to 1600. Secondly, there has been a necessary building repairs, next was example. amended the internal communication system has been broken a new gateway to the space of the inner castle, or construction of outdoor staircase to the foot of the maria tower. Inter won the renaissance sgraffito plaster, which he retained until 19. century. Of the year 1609 here was a large glory of the saved and the Majesty of the emperor Rudolph II., however, the former burgrave Vilém Slavata this should carry a resent.

Shortly after the outbreak of the thirty years ' war were 22. June 1619 taken away the crown jewels at the Prague castle, as the Castle was no longer considered sufficiently safe. After the suppression of the bohemian revolt Ferdinand II. of the year 1625 abolished the office of karlštejn burgrave and the entire estate together with the castle he gave to his wife Eleonora as a dowry and the farm for the queen. However, already in 1626 gave the castle and estate to pledge Jan Kavkovi from Ricany. His family then was in possession of this property until the beginning of the 18th. century. Towards the end of the the thirty years ' war, year 1646 the castle was besieged by the Swedish army, you get to the castle, but to conquer them it all failed - the Great tower was conquered. Castle so, at least, largely looted.

For Kavků was earlier a valuable file of Charles IV. taken at Prague castle, at that time fill 22 boxes. Then they became mostly a part of svatovítského treasure. What is especially of the castle was concerned, appeared to be a tendency for his return to the property císařoven and queens. To redeem collateral, managed to Eleonora Magdalena, at the time of the emperor Leopold I. After it got into the hands of the empress Elizabeth Christina, who was the wife of Charles VI. After he received the Castle as well as the entire estate in the property of the empress Maria Theresa, that it gave under the conditions for the use of the Institute of noble women. Then he was its occupant until the formation of Czechoslovakia, when the property taken over by the state.

Romanticism for the castle marked a revival of interest in him. In June 1812, he was visited by the emperor František I. with my daughter, Maria, and decided about the necessity of its repair. Finances appear soon, but also were taken away part of the internal equipment. František Josef I. then ordered to carry out essential repairs. This was entrusted to the Central commission for preservation of monuments of professor Frederick Schmidt and he entrusted it to his disciple Joseph Mockera. The castle was a neogothic style refurbished. The launch, however, due to delays, was delayed until the year 1887, Mocker then the reconstruction oversaw until his death in 1899. The renovation was from today's perspective, in places, very insensitive, since purism uplaťnuje the essay purity, (e.g. the roof of the so-called White tower as it has a castle today never in this form has not been) not to mention the demolition and subsequent historicising new buildings or loss of some of the interiors, especially those of the renaissance (which was demolished e.g. large part of the burgrave, eliminated many renaissance elements - e.g. in the meantime, the preserved renaissance facade), however, was restored or fixed many of the original architectural elements and generally by then rather dilapidated castle was for today's time saved.

Location

For the castle was chosen by the so-called improper headland, which is on north separated from the top of the High, or also the Height, a narrow seat. This improper promontory of silurian limestone further to the south extending in a transverse ridge, whose furrowed slopes fall steeply into the valley. On the western side, where is located the hill Javorka, which is the high of 384 m. n. m., flows through the narrow valley Mořínský creek, which separates the castle from the above-mentioned hills. On the opposite side then withholding water carved the so-called Cold mine, which is a narrow gorge, which is located between the castle hill and the hill Haknová, which is the high of 402 m. n. m. Here, then, turning towards the saddle between castle hill and the Priests of the mountain, which is a high of 357 m. n. m., the main access road to Prague. In the south, where he ended the cross the castle the ridge that separates both valleys, these come together in one. This valley then tracks the flow of Mořinského the creek up into a wide ravine, where a stream flows into the Berounka river. This valley from one side of the grips bulge Javorky, the so-called Čihová and from the other side then Plešivec, which is high 363 m asl

a Description of the castle

The castle's dominant feature is undoubtedly the great tower, its most vulnerable front of the north wall, is a strong roughly 7 meters without being broken a single hole. Length is of 25.8 m and a width of 14.7 m. it Was actually a kind of shield covering the remaining construction of the internal of the castle and also was his position the last place of resistance in the event of penetration of the enemy into the castle and into each of its parts. In her left Karel IV. build one of the most pompous chapel at all - the holy Cross.

Castle was accessible then 1. the castle gateway, called today the towers Voršilkou and already unused, the stand right at the entry way to the saddle, but when in the slope, which this saddle sklánělo into the valley Deep down. The reason was that who this way wanted to go had to go through the saddle, and was at all times under the supervision of a large tower. The actual gate was from the trip separated in the rocks dug a moat, and with the route was connected by a wooden bridge, which was partially lifting. From this gate, sticking out two walls. One steeply upwards to a large tower, while it was approximately at its half-aborted little čtverhranou bastion, which served as a refuge guard in time of discomfort. In the opposite direction went to the wall originally continuously more or less in the direction of the contour lines of the slope, which was bent to a Deep mine and continued toward the 2. castle gate. Approximately half, however, was interrupted by a concession and výpadní gate. This projection ends in 2. the castle gate.

The current first castle gate was formed later period, in the 15. rather, however, in the 16. century along with other úpravamy and přístavbamy. Later it was also adjusted and in 19. century were surrounding outbuildings demolished and the gate rebuilt, the path to it leads the original castle moat.

The two-storey tower 2. the castle gate, also called star, has undergone in the past few zásadnímy přestavbamy. However, it has retained its entry. Outside hrotitého arch of the entrance, also has a portal for walking, in the earlier period would be here before it should be trench and entrances should be accessible originally a drawbridge or bridges. This enclosed area - the so-called compartments was not originally installed, and at present is also without buildings. 2. the gate leads into the courtyard, which is based on the transverse the south of the ridge, here is the burgrave's residence.

Burgrave is the place, which was the most changed. The original dominion of the time of Charles IV. it was smaller and it grew especially in the period 15. up to 16. century. While still preserve its southern renaissance part. However, most of the other buildings was sanována during the purist reconstruction. This location to cross the southern ridge of the castle headland, allow to control both two side of the valley and then also the brooks, which is open towards the Berounka. For this reason it was fortified by a double fortification wall. Internal closing out the own space of the courtyard, it was completed right of entry the building of the burgrave's house, which, however, was to the base of the demolished 1893. The outer fortification wall was weaker and lower, and surrounded not only dominion from the south and east sides, but also the entire perimeter of the castle. The space between these two hradbamy was compared parkánem about the breadth of 5 to 8 meters.

Furthermore, under the building of the burgrave's residence on the west side was a narrow yard, which was rounded off with a tower podkovovitého shape the well. Because even after 80 meters wasn't naraženo on the bottom of the water, she was in her fed water štolami from the upper reaches of Mořinského creek. In the present day has a standing water column of about 10 meters. From this tower then rushing out of the castle wall to the bottom of a Deep mine, which was laterally separated, creating to the door, which gave in the case of threat block. Another transverse wall with a gate to close off the Cold of the mine on the opposite side.

Nominální hodnota 20 haléřů a barva oranžová.

V archové úpravě byl vydán spolu s Pernštejnem, Oravou, a Strahovem. Zde jsou tři varianty.
První má nominální hodnotu 1 koruny a 20 haléřů, barva je fialová.
Druhá má nominální hodnotu 1 koruny a 50 haléřů, barva je červená.
Třetí má nominální hodnotu 2 koruny a 50 haléřů, barva je modrá.

Další provedení, spíš znovu vydání známky o nominální hodnotě 1 koruny a 50 haléřů, v barvě červené máme pak z let 19291931.

února v rámci šesti kusé emise "Historická výročí měst a stavebních památek".

Kříže a pak kaple sv.

Spojovací most (dřevěnný) mezi věžemi Mariánskou a Velkou. Tento most není původní.
