July 21, 1941 was assigned the development of a new reconnaissance armored vehicle, which was to replace the original types Sd.Kfz.221/ 222/ 223. The machine was to make extensive use of components from the planned armored vehicle SdKfz.234. The machine was to be assembled and supplied by Büssing NAG, and the armored body of the vehicle was to be manufactured by Horch.
The front armor should be 30 mm thick and should withstand 20 mm projectiles. The rest of the vehicle was to withstand 7.92 mm piercing rifle projectiles. The engine was to be a 6-cylinder air-cooled Tatra V 910 diesel (125 hp), with which the vehicle was to reach a maximum speed of 85 km/h. The armament of the vehicle was concentrated in the top open tower Hangelafette with a 2 cm cannon Kw.K.38 together with a mounted machine gun MG 42 known from other types of armored vehicles. Büssing delivered one or two prototypes in the spring of 1943. The type was intensively tested. It was decided that gradually increasing production would begin in 10/1943 and a preliminary order was for 1000 pieces of this machine. However, before the start of production, it was decided to rationalize the production of armored vehicles and it was decided that the primary vehicle in production will be Sd.Kfz.234. As a result, the order was canceled and the vehicle was not produced. The needs of combat units were for some time satisfied by discontinued production Sd.Kfz.222/ Sd.Kfz.223.
There are also mentions of some modification, which had equipment mounted in a fully enclosed tower, similar to the one Sd.Kfz.234/2. The cannon got a shield Topfblende. Whether this statement is based on truth is questionable.
