He was born 01.06.1914 in Marienbad-Auscowitz in Bohemia as the son of an innkeeper. While studying to become a teacher, he was drafted into the army in January 1939. Inf.Rgt. 55. At the outbreak of war he served in Inf.Rgt. 289 in the 98th Infantry Division, no deployment in Poland. A course for reserve officers-in-waiting at the Erlangen Army School prepared him for deployment to France. 01.09.1940 transferred by lieutenant as platoon leader to Inf.Rgt. 466 in the 134th Infantry Division. Baptism of fire 1941 in Russia. For bravery on Stalin's line in July 1941 Iron Cross II.Class, after certifying himself at Orlo, Jelza, and Bryansk in January 1942 Iron Cross I.Class. the whole year 1942 in positional fighting at Orlo. As a lieutenant (01.09.1942) in the summer and autumn of 1943 he commanded a company at Gomel, later he was deputy commander of I.Battalion Inf.Rgt. 466, for 15 days in close combat he received the Bronze Pin for close combat. During the winter fighting in front of Bobruisk in the Paritsha section through a heavy swampy area attack through Soviet lines and encirclement of a strong enemy unit - for which he received the Knight's Cross on 23.02.1944 and promoted to Captain effective 01.12.1943. After heavy losses the 134th Infantry Division was disbanded. In the summer of 1944 he served as commander of I./Inf.Rgt. 53 in the 14th Infantry Division. From 01.09.1944 the major fought at Narva, Ostrolenka, and in the boiler in West Prussia. Decorated with the Oak Leaf Cluster (800th) for the multi-day defensive fighting along the 25 km retreat route near Landsberg on 23.03.1945. Cut off after the boiler collapsed with the remnants of his unit and fought his way into US captivity in May. To his misfortune he was extradited to the Czechoslovakia and was there on forced labour in the uranium mines until 1956. Wanka died on 03.05.1980 in Bad Kissingen, Bavaria.
