From mittlerer Schützenpanzerwagen (2 cm) (Sd.Kfz.251/17) Ausf.A Hängelafette (1943) k mittlerer Schützenpanzerwagen (2 cm) Hängelafette 38) (Sd.Kfz.251/23) (1945)

On December 28, 1944, based on information provided by Haupmann Petzer of WaPrüf 6 Lt. Goller added to the secret manual D97/1 + a new type of vehicle, which was a mittlerer Schützenpanzerwagen (2 cm Hängelafette 38) (Sd.Kfz.251/23). The type was also known under the code designation Gerät-Nr.923.
There is very little information about this version. It was supposed to be a reconnaissance vehicle using the armored personnel carrier platform Sd.Kfz. 251. The machine was to have the upper part of the combat area covered by an armored ceiling, on which was mounted a tower Hängelafette 38 with a mounted 2 cm cannon Kw.K.38 and machine gun MG 42 (similar tower had Sd.Kfz.234/1 a Sd.Kfz.250/9). The first design of the vehicle was created in 10/1943 and bore the designation mittlerer Schützenpanzerwagen (2 cm) (Sd.Kfz.251/17) Ausf.A Hängelafette. This version was to replace the platoon commander's vehicle Sd.Kfz.251/10. However, the vehicle was not accepted into series production and instead a similar version was created on a smaller platform Sd.Kfz.250/9. As part of the considerations on the consolidation of tank production, the intention was to cancel the production of Sd.Kfz.250 and thus the units would lose this support vehicle of the platoon commander. Therefore, the project mittlerer Schützenpanzerwagen (2 cm) (Sd.Kfz.251/17) Ausf.A Hängelafette was renewed in 12/1944. The Hängelafette 38 mounting project was reworked and subsequently redesignated the Mittlerer Schützenpanzerwagen (2 cm Hängelafette 38) (Sd.Kfz.251/23). More space provided by a larger platform Sd.Kfz.251 (as opposed to Sd.Kfz.250/9) allowed the installation of a long-range radio Fu 12. The vehicle was to have a star antenna. Further information on this project from the end of the war is not available.
