Lieutenant Joseph Carl Peter Jacobs

Josef Jacobs was born May 15, 1894 in Rhineland. He was interested in aviation technology and enrolled in flight school in 1912 at the age of 18.

After the outbreak of World War I, he immediately enlisted in the German military air force and was sent to the FEA9 unit, where he underwent military pilot training, after which he served for one year as a pilot of a long-range reconnaissance aircraft, in 1916 he was assigned to a unit that flew Fokker E.IIIs. He scored his first kill in February 1916, but it was not acknowledged because there was no witness to confirm it.

In October 1916 he was transferred to Jasta 22 at the request of its commander, an old friend of Jacobs, where he served as an instructor until January 1917.

In June 1917, he was appointed commander of Jasta 7. After achieving 24 kills, he was awarded the Pour le Merite. By the end of the war he had achieved a total of 48 aircraft and balloon kills. Like von Richthofen, Jacobs had his aircraft painted with paint, but this time black. After the Armistice, Jacobs fought in the Baltic States against the Communists. He died in 1978.

Joseph Jacobs in The History of Aviation (2019), a documentary featuring footage from the 1960s/70s of him and other aces from America, France, Britain and Germany talking about aviation in World War I. In the interview, he says this:
Here he talks about his clash with Guynemer
"Yes, I attacked Guynemer. It was difficult because his plane could fly much higher than mine. He was still above us. But in the end, we knew what to expect. We knew his battle tactics."
