An armored recovery vehicle built by the Austrian company Steyr Daimler Puch, which combines features of the Kürassier tank destroyer and the Saurer infantry fighting vehicle. Like the Kürassier, the armor consists of welded steel plates. Access is from the left-hand side and not from the top via the turret as is traditionally the case. A major advantage is the remote control of the recovery crane.

In 1968 was made by a company Eidgenössische Konstruktions-Werkstätte, EKW, based in Thun, the prototype of the Pz-68 (later designated Pz-68 Mk1). Born of the commercial rivalry existing with the makers of the Schneider CA1 tank, the Saint-Chamond was an underpowered and fundamentally inadequate design. Its principal weakness was its Holt caterpillar tracks. They were much too short in relation to the vehicle's length and weight (23 tons). Later models attempted to rectify some of the tank's original flaws by installing wider and stronger track shoes, thicker frontal armour and the more effective 75mm Mle 1897 field gun.
The Schneider was inspired by the need to overcome the stalemate of trench warfare which on the Western Front prevailed during most of the Great War. It was designed specifically to open passages for the infantry through barbed wire and then to suppress German machine gun nests.
