After the end of World War I, Germany was wracked by civil unrest and communist revolt. In 1/1919 an uprising broke out in Berlin, but was quickly put down by veterans of the war (Freikorps). Armored vehicles were also used in the suppression of the rebels, and one(ish) of these was the curious conversion of supply A7V Überlandwagen into tanks, which looked very similar in appearance to the German A7V Sturmpanzerwagen. The resemblance to the A7V tanks is only to a certain extent. The vehicles had a different hull construction. They did not have gun armament, the machine gun armament layout also did not match the classic A7V tanks. The MG 08/15 machine guns were located in swivel turrets in the upper corners of the hull. The machines did not have an upper elevated superstructure in which the driver sat, but in its place were two (one) observation domes. Because of this arrangement, the driver's seat had to be moved to the front of the hull. It is likely that the machine(s) had armour plating of mild steel only. Photographs of one such machine were relatively well known, but some time ago a fantastic photograph surfaced showing two such machines. The machine bore inscriptions namely Panzer-Kampfwagen-Abteilung Regierungs-Treue-Truppen and the number 54. The inscriptions were complemented by drawings of skulls with crossed bones (Totenkopf). The machine was under Reichswehrgruppenkommando 1, specifically Freikorps Märker. The more familiar machine was nicknamed "Hedi" by users. He later fought in further battles with the communists in Leipzig.
