Brotheridge je obecně považován za prvního spojeneckého vojáka, který padl v boji během dne D. He is considered to be the first Allied soldier to be killed in action on D-Day, 6 June 1944.

Den Brotheridge was born in stafforshirském Smethwicku Herbert Charles and Lilian Brotheridgovým. During her studies at a local polytechnic is actively involved in football and cricket. After completing his studies he worked as an inspector of weights and measures in aylesburské district council. 30. August 1940 he married Margaret Plantovou. In July 1942 he joined the Oxfordshirskému and buckinghamshirskému light infantry regiment. After training in the cadet preparatory unit became commander of the 25. a squad leader in company D of major Howard. Company was, as well as the entire 2. battalion of the regiment, included in the 6. glider infantry brigade 6. airborne division.

Major Howard finally chose Brotheridgovu squad to lead within the the attack on the bridge over the Caenský channel u [url=/topic/view/126370/Benouville]Bénouville. A few minutes after midnight of the 5. 6. June landed a glider with Brotheridgem on board near the bridge and the lieutenant towards him, immediately started the procedure. When advancing across the bridge was Brotheridge hit by machine gun fire by the neck after throwing a hand grenade into the German position. His platoon's task fulfilled, but he himself injured after a few hours succumbed. Lieutenant Herbert Denham Brotheridge is generally regarded as the first of the fallen allied soldier in the operation NEPTUNE. His body was buried at the cemetery in Ranville. Nineteen days after the death of his wife gave birth to a daughter Margaret.
