pozorovací periskop Leopard 2A6
PERI-R17A1

The PERI-R17A1 monocular observation periscope for the commander is stabilized in two planes to the intentional axis and is used for observation in position and in motion. It has 2 and 8 times magnification with a field of view ranging from 27 degrees to 7 degrees, depending on what magnification is set.
It is a further upgrade of the PERI-R12 which was used in the Leopard 1A4, the essential building blocks were taken from that instrument.

The PERI-R17 can operate in the following modes of operation:
(a) The commander guides the periscope and can independently observe the position of the turret,
(b) the commander observes the gunner, the periscope follows the main gun,
(c) the commander takes command of the main weapon,
(d) the commander may align the periscope's intentional axis to the longitudinal axis of the tank's hull, while alternatively in the 12 o'clock position after the 6 o'clock event.

The commander has a "Thumb Button" - a toggle switch - located at his position to operate the periscope on one handle. By using the fixed handle, the commander can also guide the PERI safely in difficult terrain and the commander's right hand is thus safely supported. Only through the changed thumb button the commander can control the field of view of the periscope in height and side.

The successor to the observation periscope is the PERI-R17A2 with integrated OPHELIOS-P thermal imaging camera, which is used on the Leopard 2A6 tank. The essence of the design elements has been retained. Thus the functions are also fundamentally the same, however with the possibility of extending the night observation additionally to make use of the thermal image. This was a serious shortcoming in the previous Leopard models. Here the commander could either observe the thermo image of the gunner or build in a passive night observation device of the driver in place of the stationary angular mirror in the commander's hatch.
Furthermore, there is the possibility of incorporating a video camera for day observation in order to have a television image also available at other control points, which already exists in the Leclerc tank. In particular, in order to improve the field of vision for the commander, a large angular mirror has been incorporated to provide a magnified view ahead. The PERI had to be moved from its current location to a position behind the commander's hatch. The view is now through an optical tube link on the left in the command compartment.
