Pratt & Whitney R-2800

The Pratt & Whitney R-2800 engine was the first American eighteen-cylinder piston engine.Development work on the eighteen-cylinder aircraft project began in 1938.Pratt & Whitney designers based their development on the proven R-1830 engine, after which a prototype of the XR-2800 eighteen-cylinder twin-star engine was introduced in January 1939.It was a very compact and lightweight engine for its time, but its performance was capable of outperforming all contemporary 18-cylinder engines.Supplemented with a two-stage supercharger, the prototype produced 1805 horsepower, which was increased to a limiting output of 2800 horsepower in subsequent production versions by compression modifications and the addition of water and alcohol injection.Series production began in the summer of 1939 and by 1960, when it was completed, had produced 125,334 engines of all versions.

During World War II, it was used to power most American radial-engined fighter aircraft, most notably the P-47 Thunderbolt and P-61 Black Widow heavy fighters, F4U Corsair and F6F Hellcat and attack aircraft A-26 Invader.During service during World War II, the engine was found to be not only highly reliable but also very resistant to damage and rough handling. It was therefore used after World War II when, in addition to fighter aircraft, it was also fitted to transport aircraft such as the DC-6.

Today, R-2800 engines can be found in serviceable condition powering a number of preserved warbirds or used in high-speed racing aircraft.

Engines marked with the letter W had a device for injecting water into the compressor, which lowered the intake air temperature and made the compressor more efficient and compressed more air.
