Gerhard Fiesler served successfully in World War I as a fighter pilot. In the 1930s, in collaboration with engineers Reinhold Mewes and Erich Bach, he designed a lightweight mountain plane with a fixed high undercarriage, slots and flaps, so it could take off and land almost anywhere. On August 12, 1943, an Fi 156 Storch freed dictator Benito Mussolini from his internment in a mountain hotel on the Grand Sasse. Between 1937 and 1945, the Luftwaffe took over 2,900 Storchs.
However, the career of this aircraft did not end with the fall of the Third Reich-after (and during) the war, the Fi-156 was produced in France by Morane-Saulnier under the designation MS.500, MS.501 and MS.502. The Fiesler Fi 156 was also produced in Czechoslovakia after the war.
