After the VK 20.01 (IV) / VK 20.01 (BW) / B.W. 40 project was discontinued in 5/1940, efforts to develop a new medium tank continued with the VK 20.01 (K) project. The machine was to be powered by either the Maybach HL 116 or the Maybach HL 115 engine. On 24 October 1940 a contract was signed with Krupp for the construction of three platforms without turrets and for the construction of the 0th series of 12 complete vehicles with turrets and armament, which was to consist of a 5 cm Kw.K. gun. L/42.
On 18 April 1941, WaPrüf 6 informed Krupp that the turret of the machine was to be modified by fitting a more powerful version of the 5 cm gun Kw.K. L/60. The prototype of the first turret was to be completed by 1 February 1942, followed by the production of 12 Series 0 turrets. In 7/1941, however, the evolutionary development of this tank progressed to versions VK 20.02 (K) and VK 23.01 (K). The 0th series of 12 platform pieces was to be split. Six pieces of VK 20.02 (K) and six pieces of VK 23.01 (K) were to be produced. Nevertheless, the company had a contract in force to produce three VK 20.01 (K) platforms (without turrets) made of non-panned steel and with a chassis sprung by leaf springs. The chassis consisted of six overlapping 700 mm diameter wheels. The first platform was completed and sent for testing in 11/1941. This version was more of an experimental trial, the deficiencies found were to be rectified with the VK 20.02 (K) version.
