After the VK 20.01 (IV) / VK 20.01 (BW) / B.W. 40 project was discontinued in 5/1940, efforts to develop a new medium tank continued with the VK 20.01 (K) project. The machine was to be powered by either the Maybach HL 116 or the Maybach HL 115 engine. On 24.10.1940 a contract was signed with KruppKrupp for the construction of three platforms without turrets and for the construction of the 0th series of 12 complete vehicles with turrets and armament, which was to consist of a 5 cm gun Kw.K. L/42.
On 18 April 1941, WaPrüf 6 informed Krupp that the turret of the machine was to be modified by fitting a more powerful version of the 5 cm gun Kw.K. L/60. The prototype of the first turret was to be completed by 1 February 1942, followed by the production of 12 Series 0 turrets. In 7/1941, however, the evolutionary development of this tank progressed to the VK 20.02 (K) and VK 23.01 (K) versions.
The 0th series of 12 piece platforms were to be split. Six pieces of VK 20.02 (K) and six pieces of [url=/topic/view/117904]VK 23.01 (K) were to be produced.
The unsuitability of the previous project VK 20.01 (K) was in several aspects. The machine was not supplied with a turret, the dimensions of the vehicle were not suitable for the appropriate placement of ammunition and equipment, the machine was not adapted for use in tropical climates and was not suited for deep wading through watercourses. Project VK 20.02 (K) was to be armed with a 5 cm Kw.K gun. L/60 (a request for its introduction was also made for the VK 20.01 (K) project, where it was to replace the gun of the same calibre but with a barrel length of L/42). The VK 20.02 (K) project was very similar to its predecessor, had most of the same components, used the same 700 mm diameter running wheels and Kgs 62/450/120 tracks. Due to the desire to develop a turret in which the armament could be replaced over time with a more powerful 7.5 cm tank gun, there were problems with the increasing diameter of the turret mount. The changes contemplated could not be incorporated into the original design of this tank. The order for the production of six prototypes was cancelled and the attention of the parties involved was focused on other projects.
