After the projection proposals VK 20.01 (IV), VK 20.01 (K) and VK 20.02 (K) were received in 7/1941 by Krupp for an additional order for three improved VK 23.01 (K) prototypes and six full-size Series 0 prototypes (instead of the 12-piece order VK 20.01 (K)). As part of the standardization of the tank types produced, the VK 23.01 (K) project was to receive a Schachtellaufwerk chassis (interlaced running wheels) and torsion bar suspension. The diameter of the running wheels was set at 880 mm and Kgs 63/474/110 tracks were to be used. Some of the components for the Krupp prototypes were to be supplied by M.A.N.. The first prototype was to be delivered on or about October 1, 1942. The companies Zahnradfabrik Friedrichshafen and Maybach were approached for the design of the gearbox. The companies had problems with the gearbox designs. In 12/1941 the VK 23.01 (K) project was stopped and priority in light of new experiences with the new Soviet tanks was given to the higher weight category VK 30.01 projects.
