At a meeting of WaPrüf 6 representatives on 19 January 1939, a decision was made to develop new tanks in the 30 and 65 ton weight categories armed with a 7.5 cm gun. The gun was to be mounted in a turret of similar dimensions to those of the B.W. (Pz.Kpfw. IV) tanks. The armour of the machine was very thick for its time, the frontal armour would have been up to 80 mm. Top speed was to be in the range of 20-25 km/h. In 1/1939 the Krupp company placed an order to build a wooden mock-up of the turret with three variations of gun armament (7.5 cm Kw.K. L/24, 7.5 cm Kw.K. L/40 and 10.5 cm Kw.K L/20). The mock-up was completed in 4/1939, and subsequently the company received an order to build a prototype turret of unpanted steel with hydraulic controls. At the end of 6/1939, the final decision was made to field the 7.5 cm Kw.K gun. L/24 in a turret with a swivel turret with seven observation periscopes. The final decision on the turret design was made in 3/1940 and was to copy the turret of another tank project D.W. (Durchbruchwagen). The platform was to consist of 9 pairs of rubber-banded running wheels suspended by torsion bars. The tank was to move on tracks 800 mm wide. WaPrüf 6 ordered eight 0.series tanks on 1 September 1939. An order for hull and turret components was received in 3-4/1940 by Krupp. After their manufacture, they were to be transported to the Henschel company, where the machines were to be assembled. The plans foresaw the completion of the first turret only in 8/1942. The experience of the French campaign led to the conclusion that machines of this weight category (machines over 30 tons) would have problems moving over bridges whose carrying capacities were not designed for such weights. Therefore, the contract for the hull components was cancelled as early as 8/1940, and the contract for the prototype turret made of unpanned steel was cancelled in 10/1940. The only chassis built was completed in mid-1941. Priority at that time was given to the VK 45.01 program (the future Tiger). The built components ended up in the scrap yard.
