On June 1, 1937, the technical department of WaPrüF 6 informed the company Krupp of the intention to rationalize the production of tanks. The intention was to end production Pz.Kpfw.IV (Begleitwagen) from the series 2./BW (Pz.Kpfw.IV Ausf.B). Hybrids using chassis parts were to be produced Pz.Kpfw.III (Zugführerwagen), specifically version Pz.Kpfw.III Ausf.E (4./ZW) and korby Pz.Kpfw.IV, specifically Pz.Kpfw.IV Ausf.C (3./BW).
May 2, 1938, an order was signed with the company Krupp for the production of such machines. The design was to be developed by Daimler-Benz. Production of this standardized chassis was to follow the completion of 2./BW (Pz.Kpfw.IV Ausf.B). Some components have been changed (steering, gearbox ...). However, the rationalization plan did not succeed and priority was given to orders for other versions of Pz.Kpfw.IV in the classic version.
