Count János Esterházy

An important political figure of the Hungarian minority in Czechoslovakia and during the period of the Slovak state. In 1944 he helped hundreds of persecuted Jews, Czechs and Slovaks to escape from Slovakia through Hungary. In October 1944, he protested in a memorandum against the occupation of Hungary by the German army. Members of the Arrow Cross Party briefly interned him, and the Gestapo issued an arrest warrant for him. After the war, on trumped-up charges, he was sentenced to 10 years of forced labour and transported to Siberia. On 16 September 1947, the National Court in Bratislava sentenced him to death in absentia during a single hearing for treason against the Czechoslovak Republic and collaboration with fascism. On the basis of a presidential pardon, his death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment. He died on March 8, 1957, after a long pilgrimage through many of the Czechoslovak prisons of the time, in Mírov, in the Šumperk region.
