HMS Formidable was built at Harland & Wolff Shipyard in Northern Ireland, keel laid on June 17, 1937, launched on August 17, 1939 and put into service on November 24, 1940. In 1935, the Department of the Navy made a radical decision that would pass on to future generations. aircraft carriers provided the same protection as large battleships. Previous ships were armored, but only insufficiently or only on the main deck, engine room and below the waterline.
