Soviet fighter pilots and air force in World War II

The most widespread Soviet fighter aircraft were characterized by a significant share of wood in the structure, especially the fuselage and wings. The reason was the need to use all available metal, especially for the production of tanks and other ground weapons, the dural was again reserved especially for bombers, battles and other types of aircraft. This was much more important because, at least usually, aircraft are not made of steel. The requirement to construct the main parts (mainly the fuselage and large parts of the wings) of wood, of course, dictated some limitations in aircraft performance, on the other hand, Soviet industry handled the processing of wood and veneer. With the production of precision metal products (necessary especially for engines) it was already significantly worse. Of course, the overall quality of the aircraft produced was closely related to the unhappy situation in Soviet industry.

Soviet fighter pilots and air force in World War II

In the chaotic fighting of the Red Army, especially in the first year of the war, trained pilots were also deployed as infantry in the absence of aircraft. Along with the number of losses in the air, this resulted in the irreplaceable loss of a number of trained pilots. The new machines had to board little trained inexperienced pilots, who were easy prey for German veterans. The pilots have undergone abbreviated training since 1939, during which they practically did not practice flying in formation, etc.
