CZK - ZH-29

samonabíjecí puška
I thought some of you might find this rare Czech rifle interesting, I enjoy owning it. I bought it from the son of a Veteran who brought it back from Germany in 1945.

Rifle ZH-29 was probably the only weapon type semi-automatic rifle made in RČS prior to WWII in the series. Yet that gun was in the military trials, was granted permission to export and small series have gone to China (hundreds of pieces) guns were offered in other countries and perhaps somewhere even in small quantities exported. The rifle had a couple of visually different versions, with Hessianova is late, one of the early versions was tested also in the US (was in the caliber .276). According to the Russian sources, the rifle ZH-29 and its other version introduced in small quantities into the WH, it could be a weapon made for export, and taken simply as attainable, the like have been used other rifles, like the French. It that a number of weapons ZH came in 1945 to the US it is known, among them are the version that is produced in a series, so apparently at least in some cases, it is probably a weapons test (this could include a fully automatic rifle which writes the Hessian).

Construction of the Emmanuel Girl did not reach excessive extension, especially because of the high proportion of demanding metal cutting machining. Contains but design the pearl in the form of a trigger/striking mechanism, which has been many times imitated and contributed to the reliability and expansion of other weapons.

However, it is to be noted that the constructor of the weapons was not Emanuel Holeček, but Emanuel Girls

Thank you! I Don't speak or read Czech so yes thank you for helping me. I know of a total of six of these in the USA (I'm sure there are more) one of these has and full auto fire select.

I have been told that my rifle is the lowest known serial number that exists today!

Hessian
ps. I wonder why the Germans brought them to Germany dueing the war???.

Might be it was war-booty for some German officer, possibly eager hunter or it was used actually as military weapon. We can only guess.
"Irregular" (not officially adopted by Wehrmacht) equipment and weapons were issued to Waffen SS units - it could be reason the rifle was "confiscated" on German territory, too...

ZH-29 rifle was probably the only self-loading or semi-automatic rifle produced in series before WW2. Although the weapon was tested for (Czechoslovak) military use, export permission was granted and limited number (let us say „hundreds“) of ZH-29 went to China. ZH-29 rifles were offered for export to another foreign countries and probably exported in limited numbers again.
ZH-29 rifle was produced in a couple of a bit different design variants – Hessian’s honey belongs to later one obviously. An early variant (bored for .276 calibre) of ZH-29 rifle was tested in USA… NFDK.
According to Russian source (see below) another variant of ZH-29 was adopted by German Wehrmacht and introduced as official armament in limited number though. These could be rifles produced for export and bought (or simply confiscated) as available/suitable for military use… as it happened for instance with French weaponry…
It is generally known not small number of ZH weapons went to USA at the end of war in 1945 including rare pieces not produced in series – and this could be the case of rifle described above by Hessian as „full auto“…
