After the introduction of heavy tanks and self-propelled parts IS/ISU, there was a need for workshop vehicles that could tow towed combat machines. Therefore, the first temporary modifications were made to the original classic tanks IS-2, from which the towers were removed. Later in the post-war period (50s of the 20th century), such machines received an armor cover, which covered the opening after the removed tower. On this cover were simple entrance hatches, later modifications were given entrance hatches, command turrets, ventilation fans and periscopes from classic tanks. In the 60s of the 20th century, the tractors underwent modernization as with the classic tanks called IS-2M. Some sources refer to such an upgrade as the IS-2MT.
