On November 27, 1944, a certain number of flame-thrower tanks were ordered for the planned operations on the orders of Adolf Hitler himself. At that time, the successful Jagdpanzer 38(t) tank fighter was also available, and it was decided that 20 flamethrowers would be created on its basis. The machines were removed from the production factory and sent for rebuilding on 8.12.1944. A Köbe flamethrower was fitted instead of the gun. In the vehicle there was a tank with flammable incendiary mixture of 700 liters volume, the content of which was enough for 60-70 shots to a distance of (only!) 35 - 50 meters. The armament was supplemented by a machine gun mounted on the roof of the vehicle. The crew consisted of 4 men (the original requirement was for a crew of three). Two units were assembled from these vehicles, namely 352. Panzer-Flamm-Kompanie and 353. Panzer-Flamm-Kompanie.
352. Panzer-Flamm-Kompanie was given operational status on 25.12.1944. The unit was originally assigned to the 36. Volksgrenadier-Division, but was not used there and so was assigned to 25. Panzergrenadier-Division, respectively to its 5. Panzer-Abteilung. On the same day, the remnants of 353 were transferred to the unit. Panzer-Flamm-Kompanie.
353. Panzer-Flamm-Kompanie was given operational status on 30.12.1944. The unit was originally assigned to the 17th SS-Division (17th SS-Div. SS-Panzergrenadier-Division Götz von Berlichingen ?). After heavy casualties, the remaining four vehicles and the remaining personnel of the unit were merged with 352. Panzer-Flamm-Kompanie.
The units were to be subordinated to a higher unit - Army Group G. They were used in Operation Nordwind taking place between 1.1.1945 and 7.1.1945. Both units were mainly used to destroy fortified positions and enemy pockets of resistance. The units were prohibited from engaging in combat independently, without the support of other units. This order was probably related to the very limited combat effectiveness of the machine itself. The gunships were only to support tank units.
352. Panzer-Flamm-Kompanie supported the combat actions of the 25. Panzer-Grenadier-Division in the battle for the village of Hatten on 9 January 1945, where it lost all of its officers and 7 vehicles. The second action was fighting in the streets of Rittershofen, where two more machines were lost. After the operation was over, the unit was withdrawn and a combat deployment assessment was carried out. The vehicles were rated favourably in the above reports. As the vehicles did not have guns mounted, the lightened design was reflected in improved driving characteristics. Armour plating was sufficient, the effect of flamethrowers on enemy troops were rated as highly demoralizing. The flamethrower itself functioned without problems, and the fitting of a defensive machine gun and the increase in crew from three to four men were also appreciated. However, the vehicles had to be accompanied by supporting assault vehicles with gun armament and supporting infantry units, for the limited range of the flamethrower to 50 meters was inadequate and the vehicles were easily destroyed by enemy infantry. Double the range was required. Reservations were made about the sealing of the incendiary distribution system, whether the flamethrower supply hose was required to be moved slightly to the right so as not to interfere with the operator. 352. Panzer-Flamm-Kompanie reported 11 Flammpanzer 38(t) in service after the end of combat deployment, with 8 more in service as of 15 March 1945. The serial number of one Flammpanzer 38(t) that fell into the hands of American troops is known. It was serial number 322091 made in 12/1944 by BMM.
