Řád založil lankrabě Fridrich II. jako záslužný řád. Roku 1866 anexí Hessenského kurfiřtství Pruskem se řád stal pruským, ale již roku 1876 ho převzala velkovévodská větev hessenského rodu a řád byl přejmenován na Velkovévodský hessenský řád zlatého lva (Grossherzoglich Hessischer Hausorden vom Goldenen Löwen).
