The [-b] S-5M air missile is a 57 mm rupture projectile with a V-5M1 or V-5M mechanical impact igniter, designed to destroy bombers at altitudes up to 30,000 m. It can be used to destruction of ground targets (aircraft at airports, cars, transport stations, fuel depots, etc.)

The S-5M missile with the V-5M1 lighter is fired from the UB-16-57 blocks, which have the rear part exposed.

S-5M missiles with V-5M lighters are fired from ORO-57KM blocks, which have the rear part covered by an aerodynamic cover.

The S-5M missile consists of with two basic parts:

- combat part - is intended to destroy targets with a bursting effect,

- dust rocket engine with transport case - supplies the projectile with the necessary energy to move.

When leaving the barrel, under the pressure of the springs and the air flow at the moment when the rear part of the projectile leaves the barrel, the stabilizer blades open (ensures the stability of the projectile during the flight).

During the operation of the powder rocket engine, the missile flies under the action of reactive force (active section of the runway), and in the next flight continues inertia (passive section of the runway).

In the event that the projectile does not collide with the target, the lighter is activated by the action of the self-destruct device and the projectile is torn in flight.

Main technical data:

Caliber: 57 mm

Ignition missile device: electric with two electric torches MB-2N

Dimensions in mm:

Length with lighters: 882
Stabilizer range: 232

Weight in kg:

S-5 missiles can also be fired from UB-32 missile blocks.
The missiles also include a stabilisation block with folding wings, which by their shape and 0.5° offset give the missile additional rotation, thus ensuring the accuracy of the missile. The rocket's mean dispersion is 3 thousandths of a degree.

Other known types of S-5 missiles:

S-5KP - Cumulative-fragmenting. The first version with a piezoelectric lighter with self-destruction (V-5KP/V-5KP1?) Assembled by the manufacturer. The reinforcing shrapnel case consists of a coiled and machined profile - a "string", in contrast to the group of rings for S-5KO/MO missiles. Cumulative combat part reloads 250mm RHA.
S-5KPB - Cumulative-fragmentation combat part with piezo lighter, penetration about 250mm. The lighter is mounted on the projectile from the manufacturer. Shard case in the form of a "string". (The appearance of the lighter is identical to the V-5KP1 lighter for S-8KO missiles, apparently, as the designation suggests, it is the same lighter)
For piezo-electric igniters, thermal insulating and electrically conductive protective inserts (pressed from "asbestos" and sprayed with aluminum paint) were to be used in the UB-32 blocks, covering the mouths of the tubes at the level of the cylindrical and conical part of the block. They only made real sense at supersonic speeds.

S-5S; S-55SB - combat part contains more than 1000 (1100?) Steel arrows about 40mm long (flechets). Lighter spacer.

S-5O (& # 1054; & # 1040; & # 1056; & # 1057; -57) - combat part contains flare (unbraked) lighter time I-71 ("& # 1048; -71 "), a delay of 17 seconds, the missile was taken into service in 1959
S-5O1 - combat part contains flare with parachute, lighter time I-71,
Rocket length - 0.948 m
Rocket weight - 4.92 - 4.94 kg
weight of the combat part - 1.73 kg
Flare burning time 18.3-18.5s, luminosity 1Mcd

S-5 (& # 1040; & # 1056; & # 1057; -57) was introduced in 1955
The S-5M (& # 1040; & # 1056; & # 1057; -57 & # 1052;) was established in 1959
S-5K (& # 1050; & # 1040; & # 1056; & # 1057; -57, "& # 1057; & # 1082; & # 1074; & # 1086; & # 1088; & # 1077; & # 1094; "," & # 1080; & # 1079; & # 1076; & # 1077; & # 1083; & # 1080; & # 1077; 5 & # 1055; "), with V-586 lighter (" & # 1042 ; -586 ") was introduced in 1960. The combat part of the S-5K is interesting, among other things, that the cumulative insert is protected against damage from the detonating lighter by a" shield "or screen and has an atypical shape - it is a rotating hyperboloid, not typical cone.
S-5P (& # 1040; & # 1056; & # 1057; -57 & # 1057; & # 1055 ;, & # 1055; & # 1040; & # 1056; & # 1057; -57) was established in 1964
S-5MO, S-5KO were introduced in 1970, S-5KO has 10 steel rings forming about 220 shards, S-5MO has 20 steel rings and creates about 360 shards.

In addition, there should be the following missiles:
S-5I - missile similar to S-5P/S-5P1, but with infrared deceptive targets
S-5Kor - missile with a detached combat section and a pulsed end guidance on a laser-irradiated target, combat section marked VM-5 ("& # 1042; & # 1052; -5" ), 2.5-7km firing range - project and tests in 1999 (technically feasible, there is an S-8Kor, but apparently inefficient due to the small caliber of the missile)

S-5 missiles are also produced, for example, in Bulgaria, where some custom versions were created.

The modification of the contact group of S-5KO/MO missiles (and all the more modern ones) significantly accelerated the armament of the aircraft - the loading of four blocks of UB-16 (64 missiles) with cables took a trio of skilled armourers about 20 minutes, the missiles with S-5KO/MO "rings" were loaded by a pair of armourers in less than 5 minutes.

To modify the older UB-16 "plug" blocks for the use of rockets with "rings", a kit was designed, which included contact groups, a mounting grid and some other parts. Assembly of the kit took 10-15 minutes per block.

For the S-5MO rockets it was also possible to use the V-5K igniter.

S-5P/P1 missiles with dipole reflectors can be distinguished at first glance from "combat" missiles - the front part of the combat part is hemispherical, made of brown plastic ("bakelite").

There seems to be no aggregate source of data on all or at least most versions of the S-5. For example, there is little on the Wiki (incomplete basic TTD and incomplete overview, there is no distinction between the installation of lighters in length and weight of rockets), other resources are scattered on various Russian and English sites and forums.

Dividing it into individual versions is probably not worth it, it would be broken into short pieces ...

Diskuse

That's right, the missile block was a bit longer and heavier, but the work efficiency was several times higher. Mainly, the lengthy storage of el. drivers between the barrels, so as not to pinch them or cut through the grille of the rear aerodynamic cover. Preparatory work is not included at these times. Inspection of rockets before use, removal of lighters from hermetic packages, their inspection and installation on rockets. The annoying and very dirty work with rocket holders, which were tanned and very rusty every time the rocket was fired, was also eliminated. We stored them (the ones we used for the shootings) submerged in containers with Konkor.

Handling of mounted lighters had to be careful not to break the aerodynamic cover of the lighter. This was especially true for S-5M missiles, because there is an aerodynamic cover on the lighter fastened by pressing, the V-5K lighters have a threaded cover, in case of damage, it could be easily replaced if it was still spare.
URL : https://www.valka.cz/SOV-S-5-nerizena-raketa-t10816#365026 Version : 0
It is necessary to mention another difference in the handling of S-5K/M1 and S-5KO/MO - missiles of older design with cable had a one-piece cardboard case holding stabilizers in the closed state. During charging, the case had to be removed so that the rocket could be caught in the grate and the cable connected. At the same time, the stabilizers tipped ... At that time, one would need at least three hands ...
Rockets with "rings" already had a two-piece plastic case keeping the stabilizers closed - charging them was incomparably more convenient and faster.

There were relatively enough spare tips, if the ammunition was not completely stupid - there were always three spare ones in each can of V-5K.

The preparation of S-5 missiles for use was really quite lengthy - about 3 "man-minutes" per piece (remove the racket from the box, unscrew the plug, mount the lighter, put back into the box - removing the lighters from the hermetic package also required to know the correct "grif" , if one did not recognize him, he worked with one can for a few minutes), the ammunition had 5-6 VZS "at hand" during larger shootings and they had to be at least a little played so that the preparation of missiles could be pursued and the armourers did not wait.

But not only S-5 missiles had this problem - in one example, a visit from NATO, I guess the Americans, very much admired the S-8KO missiles, they especially liked the fact that they are completely ready for use from the manufacturer - as far as I understand, 70mm missiles Hydra are delivered as a jigsaw puzzle - separate engine, combat part and lighter, so the laborious assembly and preparation is even greater than with the S-5.

S-8 are another "coffee". During an interview, a Russian told me that "S-5Ks are compared to S-8s, as if you were throwing matches at the enemy."
In Afghanistan, their effectiveness against earthen clay buildings proved to be weak, and most of them were there, so they came up with S-8 missiles, which were much more effective.
