Headquarters Upper Rhine / Oberbefehlshaber Oberrhein

As of 2 December 1944, units located in the Upper Rhine area were transferred from Main Headquarters West to the subordination of Main Headquarters Upper Rhine. This position was held by Reichsführer SS Heinrich Himmler, who was also the commander of the reserve troops. The 19th Army, consisting primarily of the LXIV Army Corps, was first transferred to the command of the Supreme Commander Upper Rhine. The XIVth SS Army Corps was assigned on 6 January 1945, the XXXIXth Panzer Corps on 18 January, and finally the LXIIIrd Army Corps on 20 January. This grouping was to halt the Allied advance in the area. However, the attempt to reoccupy Strasbourg failed. Headquarters Headquarters Upper Rhine was moved to the East on 21 January 1945, where it served as the basis for the formation of Army Group Vistula. The units that had been subordinate to the Upper Rhine Main Command until 21 January became subordinate to Army Group Upper Rhine, which was established on 22 January 1945. Himmler moved to the East on 23 January.
