In the tightly fragmented industrial production of armoured vehicles in Germany, a programme was initiated by Oberbaurat Kniepkamp (WaPrüf 6's chief civilian advisor on automotive design) to develop new armoured fighting vehicles, the different categories of which were to use common, unified parts. The "Entwicklungsfahrzeug" project was proposed in 5/1942, in 4/1943 it was approved for implementation.
The E-10 was to be a light tank fighter with an innovative chassis that allowed the vehicle's ground clearance to be varied. The chassis was to consist of a drive and tensioning wheel and four all-steel rolling wheels of 1000 mm diameter. The prototype(s) were to be equipped with the weaker Maybach HL 100 engine (298.3 kW), the production fighters were to receive the more powerful Maybach HL 101 engine (410.1 kW).
The fighter was to have strong frontal armour and a powerful engine. The belts were to have a width of 400 mm. Due to the maximum effort to use unified components to utilize E-10 parts, the project also had a heavier category tank fighter E-25. Magirus had the E-10 drawings completed in the summer of 1944, and subsequently production of three prototypes was commissioned. The hulls were produced by a local company, but the prototypes were not completed before the occupation of the territory by Soviet troops.
The name "Hetzer" was given to another tank fighter, the serial Jagdpanzer 38(t). However, this naming officially belonged to the serial form of the intended E-10 light tank destroyer.
The naming "Hetzer" appeared in the description of the Lt. H.Schröder (an employee of the Army Ordnance Office) to the specifications for the new Panzerjäger dated 1 November 1943 (D 97/1+). This description was written one month before the final specifications for the Jagdpanzer 38(t) were entered (16.12.1943). Nowhere in the specifications for the Jagdpanzer 38(t) was the combat designation "Hetzer" mentioned. However, the naming became widespread among the troops and was subsequently adopted by General Guderian and figured in his report on the Jagdpanzer 38(t) to Adolf Hitler.
