Heereswaffenamt commissioned in 1935 the company Fahrzeug und Motorenbau GmbH (FAMO) Breslau the development of a new heavy polopásu weighing 18 tons. Should be able to tow a cannon or a trailer weighing up to 22 tons.
R. 1936 builds FAMO the first prototype of the indications FM gr 1, after his testing is initiated serial production.
In 1938 arises another version of the F 2, this is different enlarged dimensions, more powerful engine and other improvements.
Powertrain FM gr 1 even later F 2 formed a water-cooled v-12 cylinder Maybach HL 98 TUK on the content of the 9 780 cc. The FM gr 1 was the engine at 2 600 rpm./min. the power of 220 horsepower. In F2 put in the 3 000 rpm./min. performance 250 horsepower. Consumption of 18 tons was 100 liters per 100 km, but in the difficult terrain of up to 300 liters.
R. 1939 in the production of the last basic modification of the F3 with a new engine Maybach HL 108 TUKRM, again v-12 cylinder with a slope of cylinders 60°, about the content of the 10 838 ccm, which gave the performance of the 270 horsepower at 3,000 rpm./min. Fuel consumption has risen to 120 litres/100 km, in the field 310 litres/100 km. As well as the previous versions had the machine the main tank 230 litres, and helping to 60 liters.
Total production from 1936 until stop (1944) amounted to approximately 2 500 vehicles, the most numerous was a variant of the F3.
During the production of the F3 to visually alter. The first version still had massive fenders, as well as the older types, the later, however, the fender above the wheel with the tire reduces. Later machines also receive the bumper, made of massive steel bars.
SdKfz. 9 shared on podvarianty according to the intended activities:
