One of the problems found during testing No.I Lincoln Machine was a problem with overcoming trenches.

The tracks on the far side of the trench struggled to get into the shot and were unable to "drag" the heavy machine to the other side. The vehicles were thus left "hanging" helplessly in the middle of the trench.

The second, worse finding was the poor quality of the tracks. This had two causes. Bullock's belts were manufactured with low cost in mind rather than exceptional quality. In addition, they were sized for a farm tractor and not for an armoured vehicle weighing nearly 15 tonnes.

William Tritton therefore designed tracks of his own design and also lengthened them so that the front of the vehicle protruded beyond the contour of the vehicle. The machine fitted with the new and longer tracks was named Little Willie.

For driving tests, the vehicle was stripped of the turret, but ballast was placed in the chassis to simulate its weight. Tests began in December 1915.

Sidewalk Little Willie
The overlapping of the tracks across the front of the hull against the No.I Lincoln Machine was to provide better trench clearance
