In 1940 the unit was reorganized and replenished to wartime status.


Three battalions served during World War II.


The 1st Battalion was mobilized on 24 May 1940. It is transferred to Britain and falls under the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division. The battalion is one of the first, of the Allied forces, to land on the beaches of Normandy. It subsequently takes part in fighting in northwest Europe and the end of the war finds it in Germany,, in the Rhineland. In 1945, he returns to Canada and is demobilized on January 15, 1946.


The 2nd Battalion is formed in 1940 and is a reserve unit and spends its existence at the garrison in Winnipeg.


The 3rd Battalion is formed on 12 May 1942. It persists in Canada throughout until its disbandment on 15.08.1943.


The 4th Battalion is formed on 01.06.1945 as a unit of the Canadian Occupation Forces. It serves in Germany until its disbandment on 28.03.1946.
04.05.1951 forms two companies of the Provisional Active Force, CompaniesE and F. Company E's status is zero, after its status is moved to 1st Canadian Rifle Battalion, for service in Germany. The company is disbanded on 29.07.1953. F Company serves as a reserve company for E Company, its strength is reduced to zero on 15.05.1952, after its strength is moved to that of the newly formed 2nd. Canadian Rifle Battalion for service in Korea. Company F is disbanded on 29.07.1953.


Today the unit is stationed at Minto Armoury, Winnipeg, Manitoba. It is a primary reserve unit within the Western Land Forces Zone, 38th. Canadian Brigade Group.
