In 1900, the Ceylon Plantation Rifle Corps is formed, based in Kandy.
The officer corps begins to be made up of Europeans who were engaged in tea or rubber growing in the Central Ceylon Highlands. The unit becomes a volunteer unit for use in case of domestic need or the need for service overseas.
In 1900 a contongen from the unit is sent to fight in South Africa. A second contingent arrives in Africa in 1902 to engage in the fighting of the 2nd Boer War.
After the outbreak of World War I, the regiment sends 8 officers and 229 men to fight, under the command of Maj. J. Hall Brown. This section sails for Egypt in October 1914, where it takes part in the defence of the Suez Canal. Thereafter, the contingent is assigned to the Australian New Zealand Army Corps (Australia New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) ) and participates with it in the Battle of the Gallipoli Peninsula.
While on the battlefields of World War I, the unit lost 80 men and 99 were wounded.
In 1939 the unit is re-mobilised. The regiment serves as a home defence unit, but 700 of its men volunteer for the British Army and the British Indian Army.
Between August 1940 and July 1942 the unit provides 172 officers and men as reinforcements for the Officers' Training School at Belgaum, India.
After Ceylon receives independence from Great Britain the unit is disbanded on 11 April 1949.
