Dne 12. května bylo na 21. základně taktického letectva v Čáslavi zahájeno největší letecké cvičení nad územím České republiky konané v roce 2015 nazvané Lion Effort 2015. V jeho rámci proběhl společný výcvik států, jejichž armády disponují jakýmikoliv verzemi letounu JAS-39 Gripen (přičemž uživatelé jsou známí pod zkratkou GUG, tedy Gripen Users Group).

Cílem cvičení bylo plánování a provádění leteckých operací proti pozemním i vzdušným cílům s větším počtem letounů a letecké boje 1 vs. 1, 2 vs. 1 a 2 vs. 2 letouny. V rámci letové akce bylo nasazeno až 28 kusů letecké techniky současně. Program cvičení Lion Effort 2015 byl rozdělen do dvou hlavních bloků. Dopoledne se létaly mise podle komplexního scénáře za koordinace všech cvičících (tzv. Composite Air Operations - COMAO), v odpoledních hodinách pak následovaly mise (tzv. Shadow Wave), které buly zaměřeny na manévrový vzdušný boj a na úkoly přímé letecké podpory. Skoro tři desítky letounů tak měly možnost spolu cvičit taktiku vzdušného boje, dále procvičovat techniky a procedury při kooperaci. Jednotky 25. protiletadlového raketového pluku ze Strakonic na čáslavské základně simulovaly tzv. „Base Defence Zone“, tedy obranu letiště před nepřátelskými letouny s protiletadlovým raketovým systémem 2K12 Kub (2x 1S91 SURN CZ, 4x 2P25M2).


K 20.5.2015 bylo v rámci cvičení Lion Effort 2015 nalétáno celkem 231 letů a 292 letových hodin. Cvičení oficiálně skončilo 24.5.2015.

L-159 ALCA for Iraqi Air Force


The Iraqis have been discussing the possibility of delivering Czech L-159s since 2009. The contract has been signed twice, but never came into force. In the autumn of 2012, the Czech Republic agreed with Iraq on the delivery of 24 L-159B and 4 L-159T1 aircraft. However, the contract was later awarded to South Korea's Korea Aerospace Industries, which failed to deliver its T-50IQ machines fast enough. This brought ALCA back into the game for a third time, as the Iraqi Air Force needed new aircraft to fight Islamic State forces. The Czech government approved the sale of surplus L-159s from the Czech Army's arsenal to Iraq in March 2015. The deal was made by AERO Vodochody AEROSPACE, which bought the aircraft from the Czech Air Force and subsequently sold them to the Iraqi Air Force. The purchase price of a total of 15 aircraft for AERO Vodochody AEROSPACE was CZK 750 million (just under USD 30 million). The company sold the aircraft in airworthy condition along with weapons and ammunition. Under the agreement, it also provided ground support equipment, logistics equipment and training for Iraqi pilots and technicians. Iraq is expected to pay AERO Vodochody AEROSPACE an estimated total of about CZK 4 billion for the goods and services delivered.


The Iraqi Air Force received 10 L-159A aircraft under the contract for $58.8 million and two L-159T1 trainers for $17.1 million. First, a trio of L-159As and one L-159T1 retired from the Czech Air Force were flown. This will be followed by the delivery of one newly manufactured L-159T1 and seven long-stored L-159As put into airworthy condition. Another 3 unused L-159As will be delivered as a source of spares. The Iraqi Air Force's first two L-159A ALCA combat aircraft (IQAF-5903 and IQAF-5904) landed at Balad Air Base, Iraq, on Thursday morning, November 15, 2015. The L-159As will carry the Iraqi Air Force tactical designations IQAF-5903 through IQAF-5912. The two-seat L-159T1 are designated IQAF-5901 and IQAF-5902. The ALCs were inducted into the armament of the newly established 115th Squadron stationed at Balad Airfield, located 64 km north of Baghdad. Multirole fighter aircraft F-16C and F-16D from the 9th Squadron are also operating at the same location.


The training of the first group of Iraqis, consisting of four pilots and twelve technical staff members, was officially completed on 9 February 2016 at AERO Vodochody AEROSPACE. The first combat operation by Iraqi Aleks from 115 Squadron occurred on Sunday, June 12, 2016, when two aircraft (IQAF-5904 and IQAF-5905) took off from Balad Air Base to bomb the positions of Islamic State forces in the city of Fallujah. Their armament consisted of conventional Mk 82 500 lb (227 kg) iron bombs. The strike was complemented by a formation of two "Vipers" from the 9th Squadron: one F-16C and one F-16D, with Iraqi Defense Minister Khalid al-Obeidi on board.


In the summer of 2016, a team of Czech Air Force instructors was deployed to Iraq to advise Iraqi military pilots, ground technical personnel and other experts on a wide range of activities related to the flight operations, combat deployment and technical maintenance of the L-159A aircraft. The Advisory Team of up to 35 persons is expected to be deployed in Iraq until approximately 31 December 2018. The Czech Aviation Advisory Team started its operations in Iraq by deploying a reconnaissance team to Balad Airbase on 27 June 2016. Its task was the initial preparation of the facilities for the operation of the entire team. Members of the reconnaissance team were subsequently replaced in several rotations by members of the 1st Task Force Iraq. With the completion of the preparation phase, our Soldiers in Balad took over the operational mission on 1 August 2016 and joined in the training of Iraqi ground and flying personnel for the L-159 ALCA aircraft.


As of August 2016, the Iraqi Air Force had a total of five L-159A aircraft (IQAF-5903, IQAF-5904, IAQF-5905, IQAF-5906 and IQAF-5908).


In early November, Iraqi L-159As armed with Mk 82 bombs were deployed in airstrikes against Islamic State positions in Mosul.
