Schneider CA (CA 1)

Char d Assault (French tank) Schneider was originally developed as an armored crawler tractor, designed to tow the sled armored units through the German trenches on the western front. His design was based of the american farm tractor Holt. The first Schneider has traveled in mid-1917. Their tanks with gasoline were very vulnerable, after the intervention of the tanks very frequently caught fire. They were used rather as a means of support infantry such as armored personnel carriers. Their weakness was the weak crossing capacity, the relatively short belts and a large length of the hull. Vehicles armed with a machine gun stopped manufacture in may 1917. On production lines to replace it with the Char de Revitaillement (supply tank), designed to transport military material. Significant losses and low reliability caused that the end of the war in active service were less than 100 machines of this type.

intrigued me Your talking about Spain (see below) and so I took the liberty to do some digging and I found the beautiful story of mr. Ivo Pejčocha about this machine, of which a substantial part of the take the liberty here to present.

"... The only country next to France actually Schneider has included in armaments, it is Spain, which after the end of the first world war, gaining six of these vehicles, from which is built the unit Bateria de Carros de Asalto with a base in Madrid. Schneider CA-1 from 1917 carries a camouflage of irregular fields of dark brown, dark green and ocher. The white heart is a sign of the unit.

The Spanish Republican CA-1 was dark gray on all surfaces, red inscriptions were created "by hand", 1936.

Jen bych upozornil že minimálně jeden ze strojů muzea v Saumuru (možná oba, ale u jednoho jsem se o tom přesvědčil) je maketa, zhotovená údajně pro nějaký film. Při blízkém pohledu je vidět že "pancíř" je z něčeho jako překližka. Takže fotky "zachovalých" exemplářů berte opravdu opatrně. Minimálně jeden z nich je pojízdný a slouží při jízdních ukázkách (tzv. Caroussele) které jsou při oslavách místní vojenské školy.

Přidám ještě dva záběry na saumurský stroj, jde o pojízdný exemplář používaný při ukázkách.

Tento tank bol aj vo výzbroji Španielska. 6ks dorazilo do krajiny v septembri 1921. Už 28.2.1922 boli odoslané do španielskeho Maroka, kde boli 14.3. nasadené do akcie ako vôbec prvé španielske tanky. V Maroku operovali spoločne s Renaultmi FT 17, zúčastnili sa bojov proti Rifskej rebélii a v r.1929 sa vrátili späť do Španielska, kde boli uskladnené. Niektoré sa zúčastnili počiatočných bojov občianskej vojny v r.1936, doložená je ich účasť na republikánskej strane.

Všechny španělské Shneidery byly z Afriky staženy v roce 1929 a uloženy v Parque de Artillería v Madridu. V roce 1936 byly ve stavu 4 kusy (není jasné jestli se z Afriky vrátilo všech 6), ty byly použity republikány v Madridu a údajně i v Toledu.

To s tou maketou je opravdu zajímavé.Je dost možné, že se opravdu mohlo jednalo o maketu do nějakého filmu...Do kterého?To asi zůstane záhadou...

Moc Vám děkuji za zcela vyčerpávající odpověď.Je vidět, že tanky z 1. světové války a jejich pozdější osudy máte dost zmapované...Já osobně mám tanky z 1. světové války moc rád.Spoustě lidem dnes přijdou směšné, ale ve svojí době to byla velice pokroková a hlavně i hrůzu nahánějící zbran.S tím, že USA navrátilo tank zpět, mě to tak trochu připomíná situaci u nás.Když se k nám tuším, že to bylo před dvěma lety také právě z USA vrátil náš lehký tank LT-35



Koukám, že v muzeu v Saumuru jste častým návštěvníkem... Vidět tohle monstrum i když jen jeho maketu musí být opravdu zážitek!A to teprve při jízdě musí být paráda!Docela rád bych to také zažil.Jinak při pohledu na Vaší poslední fotografii, kde je tank vidět pěkně z boku koukám, že kulomet se dal dát téměř souběžně s korbou.Také se dal dát dost do záporu.Strop vypadá dostatečně vzdálen.Tohle řešení uložení kulometu mě přijde dosti praktické a také výhodné...

dovolil jsem si sloučit text z dvou kolonek do jedné.

Ten kulomet (je to Hotchkiss) je montován v takovém střelišti, které je vlastně kulovou úsečí která se může otáčet o 360° (tedy i přímo nahoru nebo dolů) v ní je na okraji usazeno do výřezu uchycení kulomet, které má v podstatě tvar válce a otáčí se nezávisle na kulové části. Problém je, že to na rozdíl od malovaných obrázků, neumožňuje střelbu přímo do boku. Nevím přesně úhel, ale myslím že je to kolem 45°takže, dopředu se střílet dá, dozadu také, ale pokud se má střílet do boku (třeba přímo na útočící pěchotu) myslím že to není možné, což je docela problém. Samozřejmě pokud přejíždí tank zákop (a nezapadne do něj díky krátké délce pásu) může sklopit kulomet přímo dolů a střílet, ale po pravdě mi to moc ideální pepřijde, kanon má taky omezený úhel a střílí jen napravo od osy vozu, takže pokrytí prostoru palbou asi není ideální. Po pravdě i když se tomu říká tank, je to v reálu samohybné dělo, stejně jako vlastně všechny tanky WWI krom FT17. Francouzi v těžších tancích neměli moc šťastnou ruku. Pokud jde o velikost je to spíš menší, rozhodně třeba britské tanky jsou mohutnější (tohle je velikostí asi jako Whipet). A stavba makety zřejmě nebyla až takový problém, protože firma Holt se někdy koncem dvacátých let spojila s firmou Best a spojená firma se jmenuje Caterpillar, podvozky jejích traktorů se v podstatě moc neměnily, takže pokud nebyl originál Holt, mohli použít i díly z pozdějších strojů. Ta maketa vypadala celkem solidně, ale při bližším pohledu je tam spousta chyb a nedostatků (třeba úplně chybí mříž vstupu vzduchu na přídi). Ale Saumur je pěkné muzeum a stojí za návštěvu (i víckrát )

No, pokud se nedá střílet i do boku, tak je to opravdu veliký hendikep tohoto stroje...Myslím si ale, že pokud by konstruktéři zájem na tom měli, tak by se to zcela určitě vyřešit také dalo.Tuším, že MARK-IV, mužská verze vyzbrojená kanony v barbetách mohla kulomety střílet přímo do strany bez větších potíží.Samozřejmě neměla tak veliký úhel...Co se týče kanonu u tanku Schneider, tak ten byl oproti tanku ST Chamond vyřešen opravdu nešikovně :-/ Francouzi opravdu v konstrukci těžších tanků v tomhle období propadají na plné čáře.Ale co se jim upřít zcela jistě nedá, tak to je na svou dobu vynikající a také zcela pokroková konstrukce tančíku Renault FT-17

kulomet je osazen v tom kulovitém výstupku, ten se otáčí kolem osy kolmé na osu vozidla, takže umožnuje palbu i třeba nahoru. Ale zbraň je lafetována při jeho okraji a to brání střelbě pod větší úhlem od podélné osy (prostě to nejde víc vyklopit do strany). Ale v té době se tyhle věci začínaly a těžko konstruktéry vinit, myslím že v podstatě použili princip z pevností, kde to samozřejmě fungovalo (že by se střílelo nahoru asi nepřicházelo v úvahu). Ani s tím kanonem to není tak jednoduché, podobnou lafetaci požili třeba italové a po nich i američané ve WWII (M.11/39 a M3 LEE) i tam byla zbraň s dost omezenám pole střelby a u Lee opět jen na pravou stranu. Ostatně se počítalo že tanků pojede víc a že se bude palba doplňovat. FT 17 byl první opravdový tank, sice se spoustou problémů ale na tu dobu opravdu povedený.
