Marujama Masao

Marujama was born in Nagano Prefecture. In 1911 he graduated from the Imperial Military Academy and in 1919 the Army Staff College.
From 1923 to 1925 he worked as a military attaché in the UK and British India from 1929 to 1930.
Upon his return to Japan, he was assigned to the General Staff and in charge of British and US military intelligence.
In 1934 he returned to Britain and worked there at the local Japanese embassy in London until 1935.
In 1935 he became a colonel and was assigned to the General Staff. From 1937 to 1938 he commanded the 4th Infantry Regiment of the Imperial Guard, and in July 1937 he participated in the Chinese incident as a field commander and subsequently in the fighting of the Second Sino-Japanese War.

15.07.1938 he is promoted to major general and becomes a commander of 6th Infantry Brigade.

As Lieutenant General commands 2. division and with it participates in the months of September to October 1942 operations in Guadalcanal, where the division is located in response to the Allied landings on the island.
During the decisive campaign of Guadalcanal, units under the command of Marujamu take part in the October 1942 action of Matanikau and the subsequent battle of Henderson Field, in which Marujama's troops are decisively defeated.
Marujama and surviving members of his division are evacuated from Guadalcanal in February 1943. He himself withdraws from service in 1944.
