F6C-3 was a serial variant F6C-2, with modifications recommended by VF pilots -2. The modifications roughly corresponded to the army P-1A, more precisely the P-1A used modifications designed for the F6C-3 and used on two F6C-1 (A6970, A6972), rebuilt in 1926. It was a modified radiator and fuel lines, extended fuselage and other minor modifications. Newly, the real 7.62 mm machine gun could be replaced by 12.7 mm, as was previously the case with military machines, and instead of an additional tank (used 114 and 189 liter tanks) could carry light bombs. Originally, the F6C-3 used the same landing gear as the previous version, after the use of longitudinal grab ropes was abandoned in 1927, but it was replaced on machines intended for operation on aircraft carriers by the landing gear used on F6C-4 and on Marine Corps machines serving on ground bases, chassis from F6C-1. In addition, it was also possible to replace the chassis floats, and in 1928 a short squadron VB-1B used float machines.

The first user was the newly created squadron VF-5 ("Red Rippers"), created in February 1927 in Norfolk and used until 1929 (at that time it was already called VB-1B). In addition to these 18 machines, the F6C-3 also received Marine squadrons VF-8M and VF-9M in Quantico. At the end of the 1920s, the navy decided to switch only to types powered by air-cooled engines and handed over its machines to the Marine Corps. From there, the last machine, the A7146, was scrapped in July 1932, with 1,037 flying hours.

The F6C-3 also had a racing career. Already the first of them, the A7128, was used as a backup machine in the Schneider Cup, which took place on November 13, 1926 in Norfolk. Because of this, he received (in addition to floats) a modified D-12A engine, capable of developing 378 kW, and an enlarged auxiliary tank. Because other Navy aircraft were scrapped, the A7128 was also used, and placed fourth with a speed of 220.4 km/h. Another, A7144, was so modified that it received a new designation, F6C-6, under which he was deployed to the National Air Races of 1929, where he reached the fourth place (degrading, given that the 1st and 3rd place were occupied by civilian machines).

In 1928, the float F6C-3 A7147 Marines, piloted by 47-year-old Major Charles A. Lutz, won the Curtiss Naval Cup at 253.6 km/h (his rivals were two F6C-4 Navy, and since then each year of the race has turned into a tough rivalry between the two components). Lutz died in a plane crash a few weeks after the race. For the year 1930, the A7147 received modified floats, all bolt heads and joints were carefully taped and an auxiliary tank under the belly anchored to the fuselage. In this form, Captain Arthur Page won again, at 264 km/h. Then this machine was thoroughly rebuilt and entered the race for the Thompson Cup in September 1930 as a high-altitude XF6C-6.
