History:
According to the original plans with these aircraft no longer produce, but more modern aircraft the Curtiss P-60 the equipment did not get, and so it was agreed the order on the next Warhavky. The factory Curtiss, however, no longer received the engines of the Packard V-1610-1, which was a license-built Rolls-Royce Merlin 28 and so had to go back to the original motors Allison.

Aircraft designated the P-40N-1-CU, had a basis in the version of P-40L, this was a lightweight machine, which was in its first version odlehčeny even more. Remained reduced armament of four půlpalcových machine guns, omitted were also under-wing tanks prior to the main beam, the radiator was made of light aluminum alloys and the wheels of the chassis was also lightened and made from magnesium alloy, was also removed the electric starter, the emergency hydraulic system, the machine lost hydraulic charging (it is necessary to stretch out on the ground before take-off) and were eliminated under-wing pylons. These modifications to achieve savings of weight – 272 kg. Drive unit formed a v-wing Allison V-1710-81, which during the injection of water into the compressor was at the height of the 3 375 m in the short run capacity of 1 000 kW. This variant became the fastest production Warhawkem and was used mainly as a pure fighter aircraft. Pilots, however, complained about the little firepower and so after 400 manufactured airplanes comes another variant, identified as P-40N-5CU, which has already carried the usual six půlpalcových machine guns and carried a higher bomb load, the Warhawks will once again become a fighter bomber.
The mechanics of this aircraft in popularity, because in the context of relief came about the gear, which acts as a facilitator of the ground preparation, we missed, for example, and the battery and the aircraft was directed to the external source. According to some sources, has deteriorated the quality of the production. Was generally considered too cut down version among the other Warhawky. In the role of a tank not far from such performances and the range as P-51 Mustang or P-38 Lighting and for attacks on ground targets again lack of armament.
