Thoughts on the development of a new post-war tank appeared as early as the end of 1945.
On October 17, 1945, the 1st Department of the General Staff sent its idea of a new tank to the Military Technical Institute (VTÚ). It was supposed to be a machine weighing 30-33 tons, armed with a cannon caliber 85-105 mm with a supply of 80 rounds, armored 20-65 mm. The machine was to be powered by a diesel engine, with which it was to reach a maximum speed of up to 50 km/h. The crew was to consist of 5 people. VTÚ considered German anti-aircraft cannons caliber 88 mm and 105 mm.
On March 1, 1946, the 2nd Department of the 3rd Department of the VTÚ presented a design of a medium tank in M 1:50, which bore the designation tank of general use (TVP). The design was a mixture of Czechoslovak, German, British and Soviet constructions. Of interest was the mounting of a hull machine gun ( BESA or TK vz.37) with a flamethrower. Consideration was given to equipping the tank with a defensive grenade launcher, fumigation equipment, or imaginary mesh armor. The engine was to be air-cooled diesel with an output of at least 20 hp per ton. The suspension of the machine was inspired by pre-war constructions and it was supposed to consist of leaf springs. Two prototypes were to be produced for the tests, in case more companies were involved in the development, two prototypes were to be produced from each company.
For the required specifications, the company Škoda Plzeň prepared drawing documentation for its tank design Škoda T-40 ([ url=/attachments/3583/vha_fl-vtu-1947_kl-015_sl-15671_str-013.jpg] drawing Am 39-P dated to 8.12.1946[/url]). In the years 1947-48, the specification of requirements and ideas about the structural elements of TVP was solved.
In the same period, development work also took place in the company ČKD Praha, but no more detailed information is available.
The official requirement for the development of the tank was entered by the 1st Department of the General Staff only in 1949. Under the designation T 50 the Škoda company figured, the ČKD project figured under the designation T 51.


The specifications entered were as follows:
- weight - 35, later 40 tons
- length - 6500 mm
- width - 3200 mm
- height - 2800 mm
- clear height - 500 mm
- armor: 65 mm (frontal armor), 40 mm (hips and buttocks), 20-30 mm (other parts)
- 100 mm cannon (60-70 rounds)
- 2x 7.62 mm machine gun + 1x 12.7 mm machine gun (3600 rounds)
- diesel engine


The expected completion of development, including production and testing of prototypes was scheduled for 6/1952.
Škoda presented the T 50 project and its wooden model in M 1: 1 probably in 9/1949, but the design failed. The second design was presented on November 24, 1949 and on December 2, 1949, a model in M 1:10 was produced. An interesting fact, which was rejected, was the proposed arrow shape of the frontal armor, similar to the Soviet heavy tank IS-3.


No further information has been found about the ČKD T 51 project.


At the turn of 1949/50, the projects of both companies were merged into a joint project T 50/51. Intensive coordination work and interviews took place from the middle of 1/1950, where the construction details were clarified and which company will be working on. The uniform construction of the engine compartment and the appearance of the tank chassis were agreed. Both companies cooperated on the shape of the body. The Škoda company was in charge of the development of the tower and the 100mm tank cannon marked with the cipher AK 1 (two versions of the L/53 and L/55 cannon were created). It was agreed to use six wheels of the T 50 project (the T 51 had five wheels). The used diesel engine was to have cylinders up to "X" in the prototype of the ČKD company (AXK engine), and to have cylinders up to "H" (the AHK engine) in the Škoda prototype.
15.2.1950 it was decided to produce two prototypes of unarmoured and one prototype of armored steel. Both companies were to produce two engines with gearboxes. At the same time, the ČKD company had to solve the emergency installation of the V-2 diesel engine, because a longer time was expected for the development and production of the planned engines.The final form of the unified design of the new tank was approved by the authorized commission of the Tank Army Command on February 27, 1950. The appearance of the tank was drawn on the assembly drawings Am 634-P and Am 635-P in M 1:10 dated to 18.2.1950. The result of the comparison of the project T-50/51 with the tank T-34/85 sounded in clear favor project. The deadlines for the completion of work on the prototypes were gallows, but the companies promised to supply a prototype of unarmoured steel as of April 30, 1952 and a prototype of armored steel as of November 31, 1952. At that time, however, the fate of the project began to materialize, the planned dates of serial production were not realistic for capacity reasons. License rights for the production of T-34/85 were purchased and this played a priority. Due to political attitudes, the far deadline for completion of development work and the start of serial production, the decision of the Minister of National Defense to stop the development of the tank T-50/51 was announced at a meeting of the 1st Department of the General Staff The definitive cessation of development was stated in Decree No. 15705/Taj.hl.št.1odd.1950, where, in addition to the cessation of work on T-50/51, work on associated development projects of the bridge was canceled, flamethrower, demining and rescue tank using the platform T-50/51.


Developments on the platform of this tank were to create the following projects:
