First in large numbers produced version of the series JN and the direct predecessor of the famous Jenny originated at the beginning of the year 1915. JN-3 had the same hull, engine and chassis as the JN-2, get but the new wings with the upper wing of much greater span than the lower wing. Modified was also a rudder, fixed up by a cylindrical surface and drop-shaped, more or less the same as in the later JN-4 (rudder JN-3 but slightly above and below the fuselage), and control was replaced by a system Deperdussin - steering wheel controlled the ailerons and the pedals rudder.

The main customer was the british navy, which gradually ordered the 91 machines, of which the first were the British, passed in march 1915. It was about machines of headings 1362-1367 and 3345-3423. Curtiss because of the size of orders even established a canadian subsidiary, which for the british admiralty built the other twelve machines, 8392-8403, and six machines for Curtissovu flight school on toronto airport Long Branch. JN-3 from the navy, were given to the RFC, e.g., to 22. squadron.

A much more remarkable life had two machines delivered the us connecting to the army (with order numbers 52 and 53). These were in September, 1915 delivered to Fort Sill in the Oklahoma, where is taken over 1. air eskadrona. She already owned all of the eight JN-2 built for the army, and shortly thereafter, all six survivors of the machines has endowed wings and guideposts from the JN-3. Although they were from this point referred to as JN-3, but retained its original control, i.e. if he wanted the pilot to turn, leaning to the appropriate side and moved a lever, touching his shoulder. 1. squadron, then with these machines graduated from the beginning of the punitive expeditions of general Pershinga that followed Pancho Villově raid the town of Columbus, New Mexico. Squadron provided aerial reconnaissance, and thoroughly investigate the boundaries of the application of JN-3. You were, as well as their predecessor, for similar tasks significantly podmotorované, and were barely able to operate in the hot climate of the mexican mountains, often at a height of around 3000 meters.

In addition, of course, always in danger from the local population, for which it was Pancho Villa often a hero, or just didn't like Americans. The photo above documents the case, when machines were the no. 43 and 45 (both native JN-2) sent to the city Chihuahua with the mail to the local consulate. While landing a number 45 took place without problems, 43 landed on the opposite side of the city and caused between local big noise, who on the plane now began to show its sympathy to the northern neighbor. The commander of the squadron, the captain Benjamin Foulois, who flew as an observer, tried to get into the city, while the pilot, lieutenant Darguea, sent with the plane for the second machine. On starting the machine launched a barrage of onlookers unit rurales, a mounted police, and then what after the procedure Fouloise stopped shooting, joined in the crowd by using rocks. Foulois was arrested, fortunately after he managed to send a message to the consulate, and Dargue, forced with a damaged machine again to land, meanwhile, stayed with the plane help of a local photographer, before which the crowd held back until the consulate help arrived.

Climate and problematic supply (Pershing, which the mexican government refused to allow the use of the local rail network, was predicated only on the still not very reliable trucks) took their toll and at the end of April, 1916, after a month of deployment, has already been most of the JN-3 destroyed or abandoned. I no. 43 was destroyed 19. April in a failed emergency landing on the foot of the mountains west of the city of Chihuahua, however, the pilot, again Darqueovi, and observer lieutenant Willis managed to after a few days to get to San Antonio de los Arenales and in the end catch up with the Pershinga. 20. April Pershing ordered 1. air eskadroně move back to the u.s. Columbus, where awaited her new aircraft. Both survivors Curtissy, no. 45 and 53, there were odstrojeny and destroyed. To Mexico with squadron came back with a significantly more powerful Curtissy R–2..
