The number of members of the order was limited to 24 knights. After 1922 for political reasons (the partition of Ireland) the order does not confer. However, has not been abolished and still exists. The exception were the three sons of George In., the prince of Wales, later the duke of Windsor (1927), the duke of York, later George VI. (1936) and duke of Gloucester (1934). The longest surviving member of the order was 9. The Earl of Shaftesbury. He was decorated by the year 1911, and died 1961.
