The medal was founded as a single-stage for heroism in saving life at sea. After a year was added to the second class. In April 1877 was the validity of the medal extended to gallantry in saving life on land. In 1949 it was 1. class cancelled and replaced by the George cross (George Cross) and 2. class can be granted only posthumously. The last two medals were awarded in 1970 and in 1971 was a medal revoked. All living holders had the opportunity to exchange it for the George cross. Of the 64 beneficiaries that have benefited from the 49.
This honor was greatly appreciated and was nicknamed "the civilian Victoria cross".
