Avro 504 - version overview


504
The original model, an evolution of the two-seat multirole Avro 500 with a 60 kW Gnome engine, used as a reconnaissance, bomber and trainer.


504A
Second production version, differing in smaller ailerons and wider struts.


504B
Reconnaissance and training erze for RNAS with larger rudder, 60kW Gnome or Le Rhône engines.


504C
Single-seat version for zeppelin combat, based on the 504B.


504D
Single-seat version for zeppelin combat, based on 504A; six machines ordered, not sure if built.


504E
Ten machines with a 75kW Gnome engine and an additional fuel tank between the cockpits.


504F
A machine experimentally equipped with a Rolls-Royce Hawk inline engine.


504G
Designation used by RFC for ten gunnery training machines, with Clerget engines and one synchronised and one moving machine gun, and also used by RNAS for a modified 504B with the same armament but with the original Gnome engine.


504H
504C modified in 1917 for catapult experiments, the first British aircraft launched from a catapult.


504J
A large production version already in purely trainer form with Gnome (75 kW) or Le Rhône (60 kW) engines.


504K
A practice version, developed out of concern over the shortage of Gnome engines, and fitted with a universal engine bed allowing the fitment of virtually any available rotary engine, usually a Clerget, Gnome or Le Rhône.


504K Mk.II
Post-war upgraded version with wings and undercarriage of the 504N version, built under Mexican license as the Avro Anahuac.


504L
Floatplane version of the 504K, built in a small production run and several conversions and used for sightseeing, training and other tasks. Aircraft designated 504L were also produced in Japan, but in this case it stands for "Avro Land-based Trainer", a classic land-based version, and is a licensed Avro 504K.


504M
A three-seat machine with a covered cabin, planned as a transport.


504N
Major post-war version, an upgrade of the 504K with Armstrong Siddeley Lynx radial engine, new wings and landing gear.


504O
A float version of the 504N, built in a small series for foreign buyers.


504Q
A three-seater based on the 504N version and built for Oxford University's Arctic expedition.


504R Gosport
Another attempt to modernize the 504K, a lightweight trainer originally intended to be powered by the Gnome engine, but the production version received the Lynx engine. Manufactured under license in Argentina.


504S
"Avro Seaplane Trainer", a Japanese licensed floatplane version, equivalent to the Avro 504O.


U-1 Avrushka
Russian copy of the 504K.


MU-1
Float version of Avrushka.
