Carlos de Haya y Gonzalez de Ubieta was born in Bilbao 1. march, 1902, after the completion of basic education attended the business high school in the same city and eventually joined the high school in Avile.

Like many other young men, was captivated by aviation, 30. march 1925 he enrolled in the pilot course in Albacete, which began its renowned airline career. After the completion of the pilot course de Haya enthusiastically plunged on other aviation disciplines – in the summer of 1926, a pilot diploma for seaplanes, enrolled in a course radio operators, skydiving and aviation mechanics, where he studied aircraft construction.

Soon, however, began to specialize in flying at night. Hayův a huge concern for instrument flight, was manifested in September of 1927, when did orbital flight around Spain (partly in day and partly in night) on the airplane the de Havilland DH-9. During the night stages used to navigate radio-tracking. His interest in the issue of flight without sight it eventually brought on the idea to construct a new navigation device, which would be years in the night facilitate. He patented several similar devices, of which undoubtedly the most famous and the most important was still used by the artificial horizon, also known as gyrohorizont.

De Haya, however, continued also in the flying. In 1928 he performed on the airplane Avro Avian sightseeing around Europe, during which he visited most of the european capitals including Prague. Way offended 9 000 km.

1930 on the machine Breguet XIX surpassed three world records, which until then held the French airmen:
- World record in speed on the track of the 5 000 km –average speed 208,159 km/h
- The world speed record on track 2 000 km - average speed 220,458 km/h.
- The world speed record on track 2 000 km with 500 kg of commercial cargo - the average speed of the 220,458 km/h (on one flight were recorded in two separate records).

In the years 1930 and 1932 also gained National Harmon Trophy (National Harmon trophy), for which he was nominated as the most important Spanish aviator. In 1931, he performed non-stop flight flight from Seville to the city of Bata (today's Equatorial Guinea). The flight lasted 27 hours and Haya when it covered a distance of 4 500 km.

At the time of the outbreak of the Spanish civil war 20. 7. 1936 was Haya the Spanish pilot with the greatest amount of flight hours. Haya joined the frankistům, however, had to deal with an unusual situation, because at the time of the outbreak of the war he was with his family in Malaga (in the republican zone), and his wife just gave birth to twins. Haya on board the cargo ship "Navemar" get out of Malaga and near the town of Chipiona jumped into the sea and swam to shore. His wife with the children was later through the Red cross replaced with a Hungarian journalist Arthur Koestlera (a communist, arrested frankisty for espionage and sentenced to death). Haya it personally on a plane brought to Algeciras, while his wife at the same time flew in another aircraft to Gibraltar.

In the service of the Haya he worked in particular as a transport pilot. He was also the personal pilot of general Franco. The most famous of his crime was delivering supplies of the besieged garrison in the Basilica of the Assumption (Santuario de Nuestra Senora de la Cabeza) in the mountains, 32 km north of Andújaru. In the basilica found shelter about 165 defenders with their families, and civilians from the surrounding area, a total of about 1 200. The siege lasted from September 1936 to may 1937. The francoist air force has decided to supply the besieged with the help of aircraft.

One of the volunteers who signed up to perform a dangerous task, was otherwise just de Haya. On different planes (DC-2, Savoia, Junkers) performed a total of 86 flights with the total flight 144 hours and 23 minutes, with 95 % of these flights took place without an escort, and 70 % at night. Sometimes it was the deployment of enormous, because it was necessary to offset declines in supply caused by bad neletovým weather; there were days where de Haya performed 4 years ago for night. While it was necessary to overcome the anti-aircraft defense of the republicans, so once you for example, de Haya brought in an aeroplane 40 hits and other times a hole of a diameter of 57 cm.

Packages with food and other supplies are dropped tied to the living krůtám (!), which fulfil a dual function – both hindered by the fall of material and in addition, after the impact of the serve as a source of meat for the defender.

De Haya these supply flights ended in February, and for his courage and commitment he was awarded the highest honors, the cross of the Order of Sv. Ferdinand.

20. February 1938, the day after he buried his mother, he was the captain Carlos de Haya transferred to the fighter group Asso di Bastoni, flying to Fiatech CR 32. The very next day in the evening he participated in combat with the aircraft I-15 Chato 2. the squadron of the republican air force. During the fight collided with dvouplošníkem, piloted by lieutenant commander Vinals Guarro. This is managed with a damaged machine in order to return to base, while de Haya crashed and died in the wreckage of his machine.

Sometimes it's like a pilot who collided with a de Haya, given Manuel Orozco Rovira, but the same day taranoval Bf 109. So or so, is the fact that even the republican pilots were the news of the de Hayově death devastated – many of them under his leadership started with flying, de Haya was their role model. For Spain was the death of a great loss.
