History of the creation


The conceptual design of the T-813 was submitted in December 1960. A working model was made mostly from the vehicle's Tatra 138 aggregates in March 1961 and trials were underway until August 1962. Production of the first prototype was completed in Kopřivnice in September and the second in December 1962. Both prototypes were handed over for inspection tests after company trials in the presence of MNO-TAS representatives. Then, from November 1963 to January 1964, both Tatrovs were subjected to military trials in the 312th Gunnery Artillery Brigade. Some design flaws were found.


Overall, compared to the Tatra 111, the vehicle was positively evaluated for its high off-road mobility, better driving characteristics and economy of operation. Representatives of the Warsaw Pact armies also took part in the final military trials. Some groups of the vehicle were substantially overhauled. The third prototype passed the additional inspection trials in November 1964, the fourth prototype underwent trials from January 1965 to June 1966, during which it covered 66 000 kilometres.


From 1967 onwards, production of a verification series of vehicles began. Two tractors and seven chassis with special superstructures were given to the CSFA for thorough testing.By 1970, serial production was scheduled according to the needs of individual departments and exports (375 T-813s for export to the GDR and the PRC). After 1970, production of 1447 units was planned for the needs of the PRC. By 1970, however, the army acquired special versions RM vz. 70 and a bridge kit PMS in the number of 417 pieces. From 1961 to 1982, 11,751 Tatra T-813 vehicles were produced in 4×4, 6×6 and 8×8 versions.

Heavy wheeled tractor of the Tatra 813 is used to transport payload to the weight of 7 500 kg. Car tightens on the hard road one or more trailers on the largest total weight of 65 000 kg on the way and 12 000 kg in the field. Swinging half-axles sprung longitudinally saved the leaf springs are permanently powered.

Both front axles are steerable. Transmission has 5 degrees for driving forward and 1 degree for the ride back. Using the additional transmission number of gears is doubled to 10 forward and 2 back. The vehicle is adapted for mounting of additional equipment - snow plough and bulldozer plough BZ-D.
To increase the passability through poor terrain (sandy, marshy or snowy), the vehicle is equipped with a central inflation device for under-inflating the tyres while driving.
In order to be able to navigate even in chemically or radioactively contaminated terrain, the vehicle is equipped with efficient air filtration with individual connection for all crew members in the driver's cab.

T-813 (chassis number 11346-99) stretching anti-tank cannon vz. 53, Military technical museum, Lešany, may 2013. The car was made in 1982 and to the collections of the lešanského the museum got in 1997 transfer from the department to WOO 2982 Mladeč (the former Central tank and automotive base).
